Just installed the new distro last night and am enjoying it very much. For the record, I had no trouble with the manual install by editing the configuration file by hand to specify /cache and /myth on other partitions. The manual install didn't even erase my data on /myth from the last release! The XMLTV stuff seems to work much faster and better. I have also had success with a nForce2 mb and Leadtek TV2000XP, but only after adding a few lines to the bttv file under modules. With a fresh install, including the bonus nVidia step, I got nothing with this card. After some touring in google, I found the following lines to the bttv module (it always makes me crazy when people don't put the full path, but this is on my machine at home and this path is somewhat less intuitive because it isn't under /etc/modules or modutils, I don't think. I want to say it is /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv. I am sure I'll be corrected if I am wrong)

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
options bttv card=34
options bttv radio=1 tuner=2 gbuffers=8
options tuner debug=1 type=2

I got these off different boards and specifying the card=34 is not included in all the posts. Anyway, this worked for me after and update-modules. It still says bttv is newer than modules.conf. I think I can fix that by doing a moddep(?). Doesn't seem to hurt anything the way it is. For other people who have gotten this card to work or the mastermind himself, is there a way to do this automatically? I think bttv automatically detects this card incorrectly. Anyway, I couldn't figure out a way to do it in the setup steps described in the documentation. I know Cesman can't check it because he doesn't have the card.

Anyway, I hope this is helpful to someone else setting up this card because my card did not work out of the box as others' have. I have gleaned a lot of info off this board and others and in order to become a better linux user, can anyone explain what these options do briefly? I don't understand the char-major lines. I know the card=34 refers to the bttv card list. I figure the radio=1 and tuner=2 refers to the inputs on the card (mine has radio on top, tv below). I know what gbuffers refers to, but I don't know how I would have known it should be set to 8 or if it can be set to something else. I know what the tuner part means, but not debug.

This is a very low priority question since everything works and I don't see many problems with set ups like mine (maybe the fixes are more intuitive to people who have done this before). But maybe a thread with some discussion about this card and these options will keep another newbie from playing forum bingo for a few hours. The answers are always "described in another post" but getting to that specific one can be tricky.

Thanks for any replies, nrj

PS I will write up all my experiences as a Tier 2 install after I tackle the lirc setup based on the recent thread on recompiling it for this card. Thanks to the responders from that thread (http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=109). Good, clear info for a new person.

well to fix your newer messages run update-modules as root.

The reason the path is a little bit odd is because knoppmyth is debian based and the devs have moved the bttv and ivtv stuff to a different directory and used an include line.

As for exactly what gbuffers are and do I'm not sure, but It shouldn't hurt if it's not 8 I have the same card and have used 4, 8 and not put the gbuffers line in at all and everything worked fine. The important lines are the card=34 and the tuner=2 I don't have the debug in mine, but that will just set the debug level of how much output goes to the log file, I honestly don't even know if debug 1 puts alot or little output.

Im having problems with my setup and its very similar to the orginal posters. I have a nforce2 board with a geforce 4400 and a Leadtek winfast 2000xp tuner card. When i first loaded everything I setup the tuner as the hl74 defualt and got the listing downloaded. I could change channels at first but color was all messed up. I then update the nvidia drives and then added the lines to /etc/mythtv/modules/bttv and ran update-modules (all as root). Now there still isnt color and i cant change the channels. Any help would be appreciated

do you have the delux or the expert? the delux uses the settings above the expert uses a different driver, if you have the expert search here and on the wiki there are some posts about it.

I have the same channel changing problem w/ a BTTV based Zoltrix TV Genie I've been trying get going with KnoppMyth.

It detects correctly as a card type 46, says tuner is autodetected (not sure if it's right or not). scantv and xawtv both work fine with the card, but oddly enough KnoppMyth does not seem to know how to tune it at all.

You might try xawtv and see if it able to work with the tuner settings.

there is a winfast 2000 XP expert and a winfast 2000 XP delux they use different chipsets.

If xawtv works, but myth doesn't my first guess would be that you did not associate your input with a video source in the input connections section of mythtv-setup.
