Post subject:  amd64 venice w/pvr-500

I am currently trying a fedora core 4 build for mythtv as it was the first guide I have found, and got quite a ways before I've hit a roadblock. I know pretty much nothing about linux but am picking some things up as I go along.

I am planning on trying knoppix or starting over on a different distro since I cannot quite get the setup of ivtv working on the fc4 setup I have.

The question I have is will any of the builds for knoppmyth support x86_64 and the pvr500, without me having to break everything trying to figure out this and that? The fedora build was going well until I had to try to compile ivtv and lirc etc to get the devices to show up.

If anyone has any advice on the easiest way to get up and running I would appreciate it, I think I will learn things faster than fumbling with commands I do not know much about.

<apologies in advance if this is a dupe, i searched around and havent found anything definative>

There is currently no out the box support for either x64 or the PVR 500. The next release will support the 500 but not x64.

Just a clarification... KnoppMyth works perfectly well on an AMD 64 based system right out of the box. No muss, no fuss, just like downtown, slick as spit on a doorknob, easy as falling off a log, ... It also works just fine with the Nforce3 chipset.

The ONLY thing missing is having it be compiled with AMD 64 optimizations. I've actually been meaning to ask if there's a top level script or Makefile for applying all the patches and recompiling the MythTV components... I don't remember seeing one last time I looked, but I wasn't looking that hard either...

last I heard mythtv had some problems compiling on x86-64, but I'm sure that's been worked out, but the real problem is if you compiled it for x86-64 it would not run on knoppmyth since nothing else is compiled that way, it would basically require recompiling everything all the way up.

So no 64 bit binaries on the 32 bit kernel and libraries is what you're saying... How disappointing... :-(

that is correct, and the reverse is true to no 32bit binarys run against 64 bit libraries.

Bizarro land. It seems like it wouldn't be that hard to create a compability library that just checks limits and either throws an exception or up/downcasts... I've used stuff like that back to the DEC Alpha/OSF days and even before that with 16/32bit stuff...

KnoppMyth 64! One day....

well there is some sort of compatibility layer so you can run 32bit binaries, but you can't link them or something like that, for instance you can't run the 32bit flash plugin with the 64bit mozilla. I'm not completely clear on the whole thing, but I know I've seen many post about that exact example I just gave.

I see, well that's a relief, having a straight answer.
Since I am in the larval stage I think I will try another distro until the next release with support for the pvr 500, or until such time as I know what the heck I am doing.

Thanks for the help!

well you can go to another distro if you want, but I doubt you will find one with support for the 500 without doing it yourself, it is bleeding edge hardware still at this point.
