Post subject:  Hauppage 350 tuning wrong & badly

Hello All,
First time posting here--great job everybody on a fantastic application!

I've got Knopmyth up and running with a Hauppage 350, using the Tv out.

I live in the US, and use the zap2it listings.

My problem: The tuning on the channels is off. Some channels come in okay, but are the wrong channel--Myth thinks it's cahnnel 5 and it's really, say, channel 15. Other channels are not tuned in at all--the sound works but the picture is green and wavy.

Is this a problem with the ivtv configuration? IVTV thinks that my tuner type is 47. Is that right for the 350? If not, what should it be?

Anyway, I'm quite the newbie and appreciate any help you can offer.

Follow these directions to get the revelant part of your log files. Look at the tuner type which the drivers detect themselves and make sure it's not different from what you're setting.

Hey tjc,
Thanks for getting back to me.

I run
dmesg | grep ivtv

and see that it detects the tuner type as 47, and sets it accordingly. When I grep for tveeprom, it also concludes that the tuner type is 47.

Maybe this is not a problem of the wrong tuner type. Any other suggestions?

Thanks much.

I seem to recall that if you choose the wrong "Frequency Type" (I think that's the correct term) in myth-setup, then things might be off. There's US-Cable, US-bcast (I think) and US-Somethingelseorother.

I know that's not very helpful (running this from memory, always dangerous) but it might give you someplace to start, or at least something new to search for to back me up.

The options you're trying to recall are us-bcast, us-cable, and us-cable-hrc. If you've confused regular and hrc cable (by far the most common confusion), the classic symptom is that only channels 5 and 6 more or less tune. I'm don't know what happens when you mis-select either of the cable ones when you should be using broadcast or vice-versa.

Only use us-bcast for OTA signals, when you've got your card attached to a real honest to root antenna. If your card is connected to a cable feed try us-cable first (it's the more common) and then us-cable-hrc if only channels 5+6 come in.

Hey Guys,
I tried both usa-cable and usa-cable-hrc. Pretty much the same result with both.

Actually usa-cable-hrc was worse because the machine locked up after a while. (Or at least the X session with myth locked up. The web server and ssh sessions still worked.) It got stuck on a channel, froze, and wouldn't return from live TV to the mythtv menu.

Have you tried manually tuning the card with ivtv-tune and ivtvctl, to make sure that part works OK independent of Myth?

There may also be more information in the ivtv driver's doc/install.txt file or on the ivtv website.

Just a thought...

Thanks Steve,
I finally got around to trying your advice. I used ivtvctl to manually tune the card. I then used ptune.pl to set specific frequencies according to this table:

http://www.csgnetwork.com/tvfreqtable.html

However, the channels just aren't what they are supposed to be. For example, 349.2625 is supposed to be channel 45 (This is comedy central in my neighborhood--important so I can record the daily show!) However, it actually shows me channel 32. Also, many of the channels are somwhere in between--they don't fully tune in any channel.

I think either my hauppauge is broken, or my cable company is scrambling things up. (Time Warner cable in Brooklyn, NY).

Is that possible?

Gack...I don't know...I'll do some digging, but unfortunately I was operating in more of a "Here's something to try and give some clues" capacity, and less of a "Once you get the clues, I might actually have a prayer of using them" capacity.

Lemme see what I can find out.

Thanks for trying Steve.

Do these symptoms make any sense to anyone else?

I'm having a somewhat similar, but not so much related problem with Time Warner Cable in Minneapolis.....

thread at http://www.mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6824

some channels work fine, but there's a couple blocks of channels (7 channels in a row and 23 channels in a row) that see snow...

It may help to call up the cable company and ask which frequency standard they're using, IRC, HRC, ... They may even have it on their website...

This question may show my stupidity, but I'll let 'er fly anyway...

Why, if my TV can tune the channels in fine when connected to the same cable system, does the PVR card and MythTV need to know the frequency standard. Is it not receiving the same signal that my TV is?

I do have my TV set to "Cable" input instead of "Antenna" - but wouldn't that show the type of frequency standard used, if I can view all the channels I pay for correctly? I don't have a "Cable Box"

Again, my question makes sense to me, but then I'm not a cable guy, just a user.

I dunno, I'm not a TV tech or a EE.

I do know that my TV and VCR both need to be setup and part of that is scanning for channels. If I had to guess I'd say that the TV has an internal lookup table (far more limited bcause it only has to handle the NTSC-M possibilities) and you already give it the clue that it's "cable". Then it's just a matter of walking the list and trying to get a tuner lock for each channel. If there are multiple options you probably weight it to 1) the strongest 2) the set that you've seen the most of (if I'd seen 15-20 IRC channels and 0 HRC channels I know which way I'd guess!)

Maybe MythTV could do this too, but when you factor in both the number of frequency sets, and the number of V4L devices, and who knows what all else, ... it gets a bit complicated. As it is there are 3 US frequency sets and there probably should be 4 (IRC is different enough from US-Cable).

I wonder what would happen if I took the PVR-350 out of my Mythtv Box and put it in my Windows PC and used the software that came with it while hooked up to the same cable system. Would it still see snow on those blocks of channels? Or would it tune them in. I think I may try it to see what happens.

Would this give any clues to the ability to correct this situation in the KnoppMyth box?
