I'm currently running R5C7 using a PVR350 for audio and video output in a server that has no sound card whatsover.

It works fine for recording and playing back TV, but I've been unable to get sound to work for playback of divx files or DVD ISOs via Myth Video or even for transcoded MPEG4 files via Myth TV. Therefore I decided to buy the sound card that's listed as part of the KRP Dragon system, the Chaintech AV-710.

If I simply plug this card into a PCI slot and power on the box, will Knoppmyth recognize it? Or do I need to take steps to manually configure it?

Would I be better off doing a full upgrade of the box from a new Knoppmyth CD? I've never done an upgrade before. Prior to this install I always had so many problems that I just got frustrated and blew the whole box away, but at this point it's working well enough that I would hate to lose 350GB of recordings if I can avoid it.

Certainly worth a shot. You may need to change some settings to get evertything to use that device, but the boot time hardware detection should recognize it.

See the Upgrade Hints sticky posting under the "Hints & Tips" topic as well as the various other things it points you to. Spending 20 minutes or so reading through those could save you hours. Just knowing that you have a good back up and how to put/get extra stuff into/from it should increase your confidence and comfort quite a bit.

When I added a soundcard to myth a few revisions ago it recognised it on reboot. - I was previously using an old soundblasterlive 5.1, but I wanted a card with optical out. Until I did an upgrade, I had to go into ALSAMIXER after every reboot and re-enable the the optical out, otherwise the standard anologue worked just fine.
