PIII 500mhz
RAM: TBD
HD: TBD
video: radeon 7000ve (PCI)
Tuner: pvr-250 MCE

Basically, I want to setup a nice front end box with one of my tvs and wanted to see if this could pull it off. I've seen other posts with machines of this calliber, but none that are front end boxes and use a PVR-250.

Basically, can I pull live tv off with this little toaster?

Thanks.

not with an ati card, but I've seen sucess with slower machines using nvidia. there is one detailed in the hardware tier sections of the forums somewhere.

Besides if it has a tuner in it, it's _not_ just a frontend. I think the 450Mhz box that Xsecrets is remembering is using a PVR-350 for maximum hardware assistance in both recording and playback. if that sounds worth pursuing, some careful shopping should get the 350 for around $140 shipped. Amazon has had them as low as $131 with the past month or so.

This is what I have, and it works fairly well:

PIII 500MHz
RAM: 384MB
HD: 200GB
Video: GeForce2 GTS 64MB AGP
Tuner: PVR-150

The key difference is the NVIDIA card. That is a BIG difference from what I understand. Playback was really choppy until I installed the latest nVidia drivers. I use this mainly for the backend functions of recording/storing, but it does do playback well (it seems to do better with recordings than Live TV).

I would say that my hardware is borderline for a "nice frontend."

actually I was thinking about these two boxes, both using software tuners though which helps and had to turn the resolution way down.

I just have to laugh at what some people will do.
