Post subject:  ASUS P4S800D-X Based box or KnoppMyth Reference Hardware?

I currently own an HD-TiVo and have been increasingly concerned with the direction DirecTV is taking with the replacement HD PVRs. So I've been looking at building a MythTV box with 2 ATSC tuners and a couple analog cable tuners to duplicate (and I suspect in many ways exceed) my current PVR.

So after spending the weekend lurking around here, googling, and looking through the knoppmyth wiki, I've settled on one of two potential paths. Either I'm going to build something based on the KnoppMyth Reference or go with something based on an ASUS P4800D-X intel board. I'll include the exact setup I'm considering below, but as I see it there are a couple of decision points:

1- AMD v. Intel
There is *some* information indicating that Intel processors are better for the kind of video decoding MythYV needs, but I'm open to suggestions. Related to that is the whole motherboard chipset thing. The ASUS board has a SIS chipset that seems like it will work fine, but the Reference Platform uses a board and chipset that looks like it is known to work (minus, apparently, the optical out for sound).

2- Cost
It looks like the reference platform setup will likely run about $150 more than the ASUS based setup I'm considering. I'm not opposed to spending the extra money, just not interested if I don't have too.

3- Building Skill
One of the things I like about the ASUS board is that it has a heatsink on the Northbridge setup so I don't have to swap anything out ( the reference board has a fan on the northbridge chip that I think gets swapped for a heatsink to reduce noise). I've never done anything like that before, and I'd rather not damage a motherboard learning how if I can help it.

One last thing (related to the optical sound on the reference platform). Does anyone happen to know if the SPDIF port on the ASUS board suffers from the same issue the one on the reference machine does, or is that something specific to the chipset on the reference board?

And now the specs for my potential machine:

ASUS P4S800D-X Socket 478 SIS 655FX ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 800MHz FSB Socket 478 Processor
GIGABYTE GV-N52128DS Geforce FX5200 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X
Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 500 MCE PCI Interface Tuner Card
pcHDTV-3000 ATSC card (two of them)
Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200JB 320GB IDE Ultra ATA100 HD
1gb RAM (2 512mb modules)
SONY Black IDE DVD-ROM Drive
SILVERSTONE LASCALA SST-LC13-B Black ATX Case
SeaSonic S12-330 ATX12V 330W Power Supply

Thoughts? (and I appreciate it in advance)
