Has anyone had any luck getting a homebrew USB IR receiver working, like the one here?

http://usbirboy.sourceforge.net/

A motherboard I'm considering for a new front end doesn't have a serial port, only USB.

I know that this doesn't address your question directly, but you can add a pci serial card if you have a free pci slot. I had to do this to get a second serial port (using one for lirc receiver, other to change channels on my DirecTv ird). I got mine for under 20 bucks.

USB->serial adaptors also exist.

It sort of addresses it :)

If I remember correctly, LIRC doesn't support USB-->serial adapters. A PCI card would be a good option, if the chipset were supported by Linux.

Hi Dinki,

I know you post above is over a year old but I am hoping you are still around. can you tell me how you got the pci serial card to work please? I am having lirc detect the receiver but then by the end of the system load something grabs the same IRQ and then lirc reports that the IRQ is busy. Any suggestions will be deeply appreciated...

Just out of curiousity, how can LIRC not support USB serial adapters? Somebody added code to LIRC to try to figure out if the tty device it's pointed to is connected via USB so it can refuse to work in that case?
