Post subject:  new install - noob - get sound only on first "watch tv&

I installed RA22 on a dual P3-1000 via mobo. Used manual installation, everything seemed to work correctly. The capture card is a Pixel View Playtv MPEG 2, listed in the latest v4l as fully supported. The output of the capture card sound is connected to Line - in, the alsa mixer settings are set manually thru amixer. The card is configured with 2 video sources, the TV in is configured for us-cable and i do get the listings from Zap.... The composite input i have assigned to the vcr, as a large portion of the work load of this box is to transfer a bunch of vhs tapes to dvd. This required the manual addition of a channel 1, as it was mentioned in this forum somewhere. When all is set and done, pressing "watch tv" starts out at channel 1, and if i put a tape in the vcr i get both picture and sound *fully synchronized*, even with pauses, rewinds and forwards.
ALAS, that only lasts for the first try. Escaping out of watch-tv kicks me out of mythtv totally. typing mythtv in the extern box only brings me back to the watch tv window, where the video is playing, now *no sound*. If I type mythfrontend instead of mythtv i still get the full myth menu, and i can get in and out of watching tv, but again, there is no more sound! The text in the extern windows says that when a new watch tv session starts the OSS sound picks up /dev/dsp. I strongly suspect that this is the problem, as i am pretty sure the very first try was with alsa grabbing /dev/dsp.
being a real noob with working in extern windows and keyboard for 90% of the time (my normal os is suse 9.3, just as mouse clicky a gui as windoze) I could use some hands on help on how to resolve this issue.
thanks in advance,

wow, thats a tuff one. :x
I totally did not even think about hooking up a VCR to my PVR for VHS transfer. Thanks for the tip!

As for your problem, is there anything in dmesg?
Also check the logs in /var/log/mythtv, there might be something there a little more helpful.
to me, it sounds like when you 'back out' of watch TV, the front-end is crashing/segfaulting on something(possibly a configuration?) but the backend is still capturing audio/video from the composit input.

What happens if you stop hte VCR and power it off before backing out? Does it still crash the front end?
