Post subject:  Getting something other than snow (pal / denmark)

Hi

Almost got a26 up and running...

Had a few problems, but manage to get them sorted (tnx people)

now only 2 things remains..

1: getting something other than snow on my tv
2: remote :)

i am using a haupage 500 card
i followed the pal guides
and set the res to 720x576
did the changes the pal guides on wiki said

fetched my channels, but how do i get it to scan after my channels?

i tryed to get the frequece from the net and indset it into
mythtv-setup
->channel editor
select a channel

and insert channel number (ie 11)
and under frequency id the right frequency (ie 217.25)

but that only gives me snow :(
i know its the right frequincys as its from my provider.

i also notice under channels editor
there is a scan for channels button that is greyed out.. how come i cant use it?

could any point my into the right direction here?

Hi,

My understanding of frequency ID is that one has to type the ID of the frequency, not the MHz's. Maybe you could use ptune-ui.pl. This command in a xterm will open a small GUI. In this form you can change video standard, frequencies.....
Please read the man pages of ptune-ui.pl (or -h) as you can specify the tuner to let ptune-ui.pl work with. You could use MythTV's 'snow' picture and then ALT-TAB to ptune-ui.pl trying to find the right frenquency ID. Picture should be fine after that.

If youi runt mythtv-setup, then ALT-F3 out of it and go to
Code:
cd /usr/local/share/dvb/dvb-t

and type 'dir', you'll get a list of transmitters. Pick the one nearest you.
Type
Code:
dvbscan XXXXXXXX
where XXXXXXXXXX is your transmitter.

The dvbscan will start and tell you the frequency.

In my case I typed dvbscan uk-CrystalPalace.

The first transport found my channels. Note down the long number. For me this was 505833333. Yours should be a similar lenght number. And the the bandwidth. The selection is auto, 6mhz,7mhz and 8mhz.
In parkinpants's guide he told you to
Code:
| tee channels.conf
This is not necessary, fortunately....

ALT-F7 back into the mythtv-setup consule.

Under menu 4 add your transmitter name (type into the box and select all the correct area etc... Europe West)

In menu 5 select scan as your transmitter name and click scan.
On the next page enter the transpot number (the first box on the lefthandside). I took several numbers off my long number so I entered 505833330.

In the frequency box select the number you need, but don't leave it on auto.
That should do you.
Hope this helps.
oh and remember to kill yourbackend if you need to select your reciever card!

Hi tophee,

Does this also work for non-DVB cards as the Hauppauge 500? I understood that this is a dual tuner analog card.

D'oh.... Missed that one. I should read more carefully....

Not sure actually. I assumed the post was about DVB.

Guess I was getting carried away with the PAL thing...

I'm sure someone can tell you who has an anologue card. I would think with the 'ease' of setting most of KnoppMythTV up it would be similar to DVB when conducting an anologue scan.

Darn I am an idiot...

*Edited to make sense!*

Of course the other option is buy a DVB card - That would work...

Hi,

In the past I did some google searches about this problem. Hauppauge cards need a 'beter' or stronger signal compared to TV sets. In this forum some poeple have used a splitter connected to the wall jack with bad picture via Hauppauge analogue cards. Removing the splitter helps to get a clean or better picture. Another item is finetuning in 'mythtv-setup'. It should be 0 (zero) for each channel or it just can be used to finetune. I ran into this issue because of wrong handeling the 'mythfilldatabase --manual' questions. This dumps wrong finetune values into the box...

Now I'm using an decent cable amplifier, perfect picture.

alright got it on the cable direct to the box, where it comes out of in the wall.. still mostly noise, and sometimes you can see a picture and sometimes you cant.

sure it cant be a hw problem or settings problem?
all the fine tunes on mythtv-setup is on 0

Hi,
Quite a few things to check now. Is this the Hauppauge 500 with two or one cable jack? (I think that there are 500 cards with two cable jacks). The cable is connected to the cable jack and not to the composite? Are the connections in the mythtv-setup correct? I mean: video? -> tuner? -> provider? Can you switch between tuners? This can be done by typing 'Y' during watching TV.
Is the correct tuner chosen by the ivtv driver? You might check the log (dmesg)
Its strange that you sometimes have a picture. This suggest something with cablesignal stability and quality.

Its the Haupauge card, with on cable jack, its connected direct to the atenna cable, from my wall.

under dmesg it says it has found my card as type 56, tryed to put that into my ivtv, that dosent change any thing though...

also the noise, plays then stop for a few cen, and then play again. Dont know if its beause of the noise or something else.

You're sure you're connected to the cable one and not the FM one? Easy to get this wrong if you can't see or misread the labels during installation...

Also are you sure you've got the right frequency set selected In mythtv-setup for your locale? (Sorry I've already forgotten which part of northern Europe that is... edit - oh yeah, Denmark) It defaults to us-cable if you're not careful...

You may also need to do something in the IVTV driver setup to kick it into PAL mode... There's something about that here (remember the 500 is just two 150's on the same board as far as the software is concerned): http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... stallation
