I know many of the windows MCE machine's remote will actually turn the computer off and on.

Is there a way to do this on just any machine? I usually keep mine running but it would be nice to be able to power on the Mythbox from a remote.

Turning off is not really the problem. But Turning it on remotely is the biggy to address here.

I guess is that this is either done via USB power on (check your BIOS) or with special hardware. If you search the LIRC site (I think that is where I saw it...), there are instructions on how to power up via one's remote (requires hardware mod if I remember correctly).

Some Silverstone cases come with a harness that goes in line with the ATX power supply connector. They come with a remote and reciver in the box...and with that harness they can turn the system on/off/reset I think.

I dont know if their remote works with Linux though.
