This is really a Linux-y type of question more than *just* Knoppmyth related... but hopefully the answer will benefit other, too.

Does the backend require a video card?

That's the short version of the question. My mobo doesn't have on-board video, so I installed the video card from my other x86 box -- it can limp along on its built-in video until I'm done with the Myth box. Of course when the Mythbox is done, I won't run mythfrontend on it, and there won't be a monitor. I'd like to return the video card to the x86 box.

Okay, so far the answer's easy -- what the heck do I need a video card for? The thing is, I'd still like to VNC into the backend box rather than just ssh into it, particularly for running mythtv-setup which uses X.

So now the real question -- do I need to do any special configuration to the backend back in order to remove the video card but still support the ability to VNC into the box?

THANKS.

You can ssh into the box and forward the display to an X server running on your other x86 box. That is what I do. There are simple instructions on how to do it on the wiki page.

question is going to be will your mb boot without a video card? most standard mb's won't.

Usally there is a option in the bios setup where you can disable the check for video on bootup.

Hmmm... I hadn't thought of that -- I just assumed the motherboard would automatically work without a video card. Of course in the old days they wouldn't boot up without a keyboard, so who knows. I've already gotten my x-sessions forwarded (well, using x11vpn). But that mirrors the display on the current video card, which I'm counting on not having.

The first test, though, will be to test-boot without the card... THANKS.

acutally most mb's I've seen in desktop machines don't have this option. many server boards do, but not most desktop boards.

Even if you do get the computer to boot without video I don't believe VNC will work as it is just a reflection of the current desktop on the computer you are connecting too.

I concur with ryanpatterson in that you will have to use x11 Forwarding.
