I just purchased a television that has an RGB input. All my existing monitors have permanently attached RGB cables so I can't just try the connection without purchasing another cable. I'm wondering if the TV out quality will be much different if I switch to RGB from Svideo. The advantage I see is that I should be able to more clearly read text when I exit MythTV and perform maintenance on the machine. I currently do not have dual output running, but I guess that would be another option if the TV out quality of RGB is worse than Svideo. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. |

I guess in theory, SVideo and RGB would look about the same on a TV. Unless ofcourse you have a wishbang TV that supports higher than TV resolutions! |

According to the information located at Samsung Digital TV Guide, S-Video supports at a maximum, 480i, while RGB supports HDTV resolutions, so it's more an issue of what your television supports, and that's a question that we can't answer for you. -Jason |

It pretty much depends on what RGB modes you TV will work with. If you can run your TV with a progressive resolution it will most deffently be better then an s-video connection. What does the RGB connector on the back of the TV look like? Is it a 15 pin HD d-sub connector (VGA). Or is it three RCA jacks? Or maybe three BNC jacks? You should read the users manual for your TV and see if it specifies the supported resolution, timings and refresh rates. Warrning: Sending an out of spec resolution or refresh rate to your TV can damage or destroy it. Computer monitors are much more flexiable. They support a brod rage of signal timings. TV's typically only support very specfic timings. |

Thanks for the responses. The connector on the back of the set is a standard VGA connector. According the tv set's manual it will support upto 1280x768. It also specifies the horizontal frequency (47.4) and vertical frequency (60) at this resolution. I've read some of the warnings on damaging the tv set with incorrect values in XF86Config-4. I have to admit I'm confused by the XF86Config-4 file. I'll be doing some reading tonight to see if I can understand what's required in XF86Config-4 to make the set operate a high resolution. If any of you have any tips in this department I'd appreciate it. Thanks. |

So, you set can most likely do 720P (check you manual). You'll need an approriate modeline for this resolution and of course use the RGB connector. |
