Post subject:  Laptop and a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card?

I have a USB Plextor TV-402UNA. I wanted to run it on an old laptop, but it's only got USB 1.1. It sort of works, but I get a lot of "Remote encoder not responding" errors, as well as green screens with lots of pixelation.

Will a USB PCMCIA v2.0 card work? Will it fix the problem?

FWIW, the Plextor seems to work fine - if I stop/start gorecord or MythTV enough I'll get a good capture (both audio and video) for awhile, but I'll eventually get a "Remote encoder not responding" error and it'll stop recording or drop back to the main MythTV menu.

Thanks,

Bret

One can only assume that the PCMCIA would work (Google to find one that works w/ Linux). As to whether it would solve your problem, I don't know. Don't Plextor have a forum or something?

The only USB 2.0 cards I know of are CardBus, not PCMCIA. The distinction is subtle, but PCMCIA is like the old ISA bus (i.e. slow) and CardBus is like the PCI bus (i.e. fast). The quickest you can get data to move through an old PCMCIA card is 1-2M bytes/sec -- not nearly fast enough to support USB 2.0.

Here's an interesting FAQ I found on USB 2.0. If your "old" laptop is new enough to support CardBus you're in luck.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Yeah, I see what you mean about cardbus vs. pcmcia. I took another look at tigerdirect.com and saw that the current cards are pcmcia type II, which does 480 MB/s (USB 2). I'll go check the Plextor forums.
