Post subject:  IR Cabling Question

I'm having problems with my IR Cable connections. First of all let me describe the situation. I'm using a PVR-350 and it's IR. The IR does work when pluged into the back of the computer. But I need to run it 75 ft up and over to my 2nd story bedroom. So I have done the following. All cables are stereo plugs and wires. Soldered a short 3ft. cable(tested and ok) that has male 2.5mm on one end(computer) and male 3.5mm on the other(wall plate). Then I run a cable in wall that has male 3.5 mm on both ends. both plug into the back of wall plates. Then I have a short 4 in cable that has male 3.5mm(wall plate) to female 2.mm(ir Reciever). My Cable is a shielded cable that has 2 wires and an unsheilded ground. I connected the white wire to the right side of every plug, the black to the left, and the ground the casing(bottom). My wires are alittle thicker than probably needed , I think they are 18 guage. Does anyone see any logic that I may have missed as to why this isn't working? Is their a maxium cord lenght for IR cable before the signal degrads? Any help would be very much appeicated.

Wow thats a long way. It might have been a better idea to buy a new RF remote but anyway...
I extended the cable to the IR receiver on my PVR150. I used Cat4 cable and extended it only 15 feet but it work fine (well aside from the normal 150 silver remote dying from time to time problem).

I would guess that the problem has more to do with the signal loss through all the plugs as compared to the length of wire. Have you tried directly soldering the wires from the 350 to the receiver and skipping the plugs?

I also seem to remember that my cable was 3 wire and not 2. I am not at home now so this is from memory. Are you sure that you are not using the IR Blaster cable?

So does your wire have 3 wires and a ground, or 2 wires and a ground? I'm thinking after some tests I did last night, that could be my problem

Problem Sovled!!!

So here's what happened, I finally got a voltimeter and check my connections, they were all messed up. So I ended up re-soldering the wires in the propper configureation. Basically here's were I screwed up. I had different connecters on my wire ie 3.5mm and 2.5 mm stereo plugs. Well i soldered under the assumtion that the connection on the left would be the outer most connecter on the plug itself on both the 2.5mm and 3.5mm, which wasn't the case. So in effect I was crossing the wires by the time it got down to my computer. Now it works perefectly. I also in my searching on this never found anyone mentioning how far they could send the signal so no I know becuase I have a working connection with 50 ft of IR cable
