Post subject: | GUI shows, but not recordings, through VGA out [SOLVED!!] |
Hi folks, Hoping someone can help me. Searched the forum and couldn't find anything quite like this. I've just hooked up my Knoppmyth box (R5A22) to my new flat screen tv, using my FX5200's VGA-out. Previously, I used the graphic card's S-Video-out to connect to an old CRT tv, and everything worked great. I've also gone back to the standard XF86Config-4 file that I think came with Knoppmyth. I'll eventually adjust the resolutions to get one that works better with the tv's native 16:9 (1366x768) resolution. Everything looks great with the Mythtv GUI on screen, as well as the X desktop. I can play DVD's no problem using Xine. But when I go to watch a recording, it seems that the TV no longer gets a signal, like the playback stops using the video card's VGA port. Any ideas on what's happening here? It sounds like it should be some simple setting, but I'm just banging my head here, and the wife's gonna kill me soon if I don't do something. Thanks! Lev. |

make sure you don't have any twinview or metamode stuff in your XF86Config-4 file. |

No, don't see references to either of those. Hope it's alright - here's my XF86Config-4 file: Code: Section "ServerLayout"

ok you may want to get rid of this line Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B" Also you for sure want to install and use the nvidia drivers, I know you are not because of this line Driver "nv" for the nvidia driver it is Driver "nvidia" driver has to be installed first. also most tv's require a 60hz vert refresh, but it might not matter with yours since it has vga inputs. |

I've tried it both with and without the "TVStandard" Option, but no go in both cases. Regarding the Nvidia drivers and the "nvidia" Driver line - the previous XF86Config-4 file I was using when hooked up to a CRT tv via Svideo to Composite did have the "nvidia" instead of "nv" line, as I have previously installed the Nvidia drivers when I set up Knoppmyth. I've even double-checked my backup copy of that old file, and it used "nvidia". The strange thing is, now when I use "nvidia" instead of "nv" on the Driver line, I don't get anything - no GUI frontend, no DVD playback, etc. Whereas when I use "nv" I just can't watch recordings (which were made a few days ago with the old XF86Config-4, as I haven't reattached cable box yet.) Should I try reinstalling the Nvidia drivers? What's the best way of doing that? Thanks, Lev. |

did you try setting the horz refresh to 60 when you used the nvidia driver, sometimes it is not as forgiving as the nv driver about stuff like that. To reinstall it there is a script install-nvidavernumberblahblah.sh has to be run from console as root. |

Thanks, Xsecrets, for all your suggestions. My setup isn't being very cooperative. ![]() I forced the reinstallation of the 7174 Nvidia drivers for good measure, and lowered the 'acceptable' Horiz. timings window to below 62 kHz. With the "nvidia" driver specified in the XF86Config-4 file, my flat screen is probed and plenty of valid modelines seem to be found as before. Also, the XFree86 log file and the gdm log file show proper loading of Nvidia drivers and modules. Everything seems to be running fine on the machine's end - it just isn't outputting the signal on the VGA port when the Nvidia drivers are being used. I keep thinking this has something to do with the fact that with my old TV I used the Svideo out, and that there's some setting to use the VGA port somewhere I'm missing. Thanks, Lev. |

An update: Used Powerstrip on my other computer, hooked up to the flat panel display, and generated a 1024x768 modeline, which I put as the only modeline in my XFConfig86-4 file, and confirmed that it was valid. I think at least most of those errors are because the info is missing from the .nvidia-settings-rc file: Code: #
# /home/mythtv/.nvidia-settings-rc # # Configuration file for nvidia-settings - the NVIDIA X Server Settings utility # Generated on Wed Jan 25 18:31:54 2006 # # ConfigProperties: ToolTips = Yes DisplayStatusBar = Yes SliderTextEntries = Yes IncludeDisplayNameInConfigFile = No ShowQuitDialog = Yes # Attributes: And I don't seem able to run nvidia-settings from the command prompt - just get a "Gtk-WARNING**: cannot open display:" when I try that. Anyway, don't know if they really matter, since nearly all (except one or two of the errors shown) just use default values. |

OK, I found the answer - very simple really: I have to use Code: Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" in my XF86Config-4 file, in the "Monitor" section, even though I'm using a digital flat panel rather than CRT.
In the Read-Me for the Nvidia drivers, the description of this option reveals that the card will use the DVI output if it detecst a DFP (digital flat panel), which is what it was doing: Quote: Option "ConnectedMonitor" "string" So simple!
Allows you to override what the NVIDIA kernel module detects is connected to your video card. This may be useful, for example, if you use a KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch and you are switched away when X is started. In such a situation, the NVIDIA kernel module cannot detect what display devices are connected, and the NVIDIA X driver assumes you have a single CRT. Valid values for this option are "CRT" (cathode ray tube), "DFP" (digital flat panel), or "TV" (television); if using TwinView, this option may be a comma-separated list of display devices; e.g.: "CRT, CRT" or "CRT, DFP". NOTE: anything attached to a 15 pin VGA connector is regarded by the driver as a CRT. "DFP" should only be used to refer to flatpanels connected via a DVI port. Now I can focus on getting the resolutions working better for the 16:9 aspect. Thanks for your time, Xsecrets. Lev. |
