Post subject:  HD Tuner Cards, NSTC, and ATSC

I originally thought that an HD tuner card could receive both HD (NTSC) and regular (ATSC) channels. In my recent readings, it looks like that isn't true. (Correct me if I am wrong.)

On this site:

...it says that the HD3000 supports NSTC and QAM, whereas the Air2PC HD5000 only supports QAM. Is that true?

I know that the pcHDTV HD3000 was the defacto standard for HD on Myth, but there is a lot of talk of the Air2PC HD5000. It also says on that site that the Air2PC card takes some of the load off of the CPU. Is that why people are leaning towards it?

any hdtv card can record both the way you stated it. some standard def is transmitted ATSC and any of the hd cards will record it. However none of them will record NTSC which is old analog ( well the pchdtv3000 will, though it does a very poor job, and can't record it at the same time as ATSC)

I think that is correct that the air2pc does not support any ntsc, but as noted above you really don't want to use a pchdtv3000 for that either. There are several people on the board here using the hd5000. I haven't really followed it, but I think the reason some perfer it is that I've heard it has a better tuner for OTA.
