The verson of kernel shipping with knoppmyth needs a bump.
2.6.3 is what I think we are using.
There is a issue with the b44 network driver - this is the driver for dell integrated NICs. It doesn't handle collisions properly and will stall out until a bigger error is found and the device reset.

This causes a problem in any intensive network application. Audio is fine, but watching tv and movies induces the problem. It appears to the user as a few seconds of audio and video, then a pause of varying length.

This bug was fixed in 2.6-15rc3, if i remember correctly. I built it and it fixed it on my box. They are at .15.1 now.

I'd love to see 2.6.15, as it adds native SATA support and native support for the HD5000 capture card. I think it will fix a lot of problems with mythTV installations if it is implemented correctly.

Why is a kernel issue posted under hardware? KnoppMyth has never used 2.6.3.

i agree though, 2.6.15 should fix a lot of problems with mythtv and hardware support..

i cant wait till it does...

if you need a kernel update just do it yourself. i remember a while ago all of us who had twinhan dvb cards had to. so if you take a look for that thread you will find a script that will do it for you.

When I first started playing with MythTV I tried Knoppmyth R5a16 and ran smack into this issue with my onboard Broadcom network chip. I tried R5a22 and had the same problems. At that point I switched to Gentoo *sorry* for my MythTV box. I got Myth working on Gentoo but it took weeks of tweaking and it still lacks some features that are "standard" with Knoppmyth.

I decided to give Knoppmyth another shot and figure out how to manually update the kernel to get around the "b44" driver issue.

I installed R5a30.2 nearly a week ago and havn't had any network lock-ups or issues at all and I didn't do anything to the kernel.

QUESTION: Can someone tell me what changed between R16/22 and R30.2 that would have made the "b44" network issues go away? I'm ready to switch over to Knoppmyth completely but I want to make sure the "b44" network issue is resolved.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, a16 is from May, 2005, & 30.2 is from Jan, 2006. there was a lot changed in the kernel during that time. And the release with MythTV 0.19 "just might" be even newer! If I were in your shoes, and I'm not, I'd wait for the testers to pound on cesman's newest release, then wait for the folks who first install it to see if they have any problems, then "go for it".

I'm pretty sure cesman said the next version will have a 2.6.15 kernel.

Thanks for the replys. I realize that a30.2 is almost a year newer than a16 but don't they still use the same kernel? I'm sure it has probably been patched, etc... and I'm guessing that somewhere along the line an updated b44 module was probably included. I was just wondering if anyone knew for sure. I know there is a logical explanation for why things work now where they didn't before. I'd just like to know what it is.
