Hello all,

I'm looking at setting up a Myth box for use with Dish Network. I want to view/record live tv and simultaneously record another channel in the background.

So, question one (which I believe is obvious, but I'll ask anyway), I need two satellite receivers for this to work, and two encoders in my Myth box, right?

Ok, given that I need two encoders, I was thinking of using one Hauppauge 250 and one 350 (to cut down on cpu usage and also to use the 350 for tv output).

Question two, how does the sound encoding work with these cards? I've read conflicting posts on various forums and I'm not sure what the actual answer is. I've read that you need to run sound output from the Hauppauge card to the input on a sound board in the system. So, does that mean I need two sound cards, one for each Hauppauge?

Thanks much!

It depends on what the question is and how you have things hooked up.

Recording through the tuner/coax sound is included.

Recording through the S-Video or composite input you need to supply sound from your video/audio source (cable or satt. box, ...)

Playback from the PVR-350 ... Not sure... You may have an option of either using the audio output from the 350 or from your soundcard. The output dongle supplied with the card looks like it has RCA L+R outputs along with S-Video and composite. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Showimage ... d+-+Retail

What tjc said is corrent but I think he made it more confusing then it needs to be.

The hauppauge cards record sound along with the video straight into the mpeg stream they produce. No sound card is required for recording.

When playing back a recording with the pvr-350 the card decodes the sound and outputs a line level signal. Agian no sound card is required. You can plug the pvr-350's line-out directly into your TV.

The looping the sound back into a sound card everybody is talking about is so that you can hear sound from other sources besides the hauppauge recordings. Any .mp3, .avi, .mpeg, etc. file that you might want to play can't access the pvr-350's sound output. So you would never hear the sound on your TV unless you unplugged the pvr-350's line-out and plugged in your sound card's line-out.

But if you plug the pvr-350's line-out into the sound card's line-in you can mix the two sources together and run one cable from the soundcard to the TV and get sound from all the sources.
