I recently switched out my Trident '94 graphics card (because it is obviously 12 years old, and doesn't suffice) with a graphics card that came with my brothers HP. I believe its an nvidia card, though it didn't say. I'm pretty sure its a gf3 or gf4mx. Something along those lines.

I put it into my mythbox and booted it up and it says it cannot run GDM, and cannot connect to X server. The error says it isn't detecting the display, but, obvious its working. How do i reconfigure my video card settings to recognize the new card?

I'm using the next to newest version. So... 0.18.1

I can't give you a difinitive answer, but let me guess... your displaying to a TV screen, right? And you did an install/upgrade using the TV switch?

If so, it's because your computer can't work out what resolution to use with your television set.

If the card is working, you should get something, for example when you boot up you get the loading information.

If you end up at a screen saying it can't start the GDM and you end up at the root screen, perhaps try editing your XF86Config-4 file, you could replace it with the one of the examples found in the same folder.

If you've swapped these files over and had no joy, edit out the line reading
which will allow X to start correctly.... (so I'm told.)

To find out what exactly is causing the GDM to fail to start, try looking in in this logfile which should tell you why your different modelines didn't work.

If you want to find out what your graphics card is, perhaps install it into your Windows machine and run something like "Everest", that'll tell you just about everything about your hardware.

As I say, not an answer, but hopefully helping to point you in the right direction.

If you're looking for the right (debian) driver for your card this page is really handy, just paste the results of a 'lspci -n' there and click.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I'm not displaying on a television.

I had a perfectly good KnoppMyth Box running on a Soltek board, with AMD2500+ barton core. The videocard however was about 10 years old and wasn't suffice. So I switched it with my brothers old GeForce.

Nothing was changed aside from the video card. So obviously the system is trying to run based on the old configuration. Is there a way to reconfigure it without reinstalling? Much like windows "detect new devices" or wahtever its called... Or, if i simply updated to 0.19 will it allow me to reconfigure hardware?

Run the script to install the nvidia driver, which is "install-nvidia-7174.sh" if I remember right. Then if it still doesn't work, find yourself a good sample XF86Config-4 and copy it into place. Searching for the file name around here should turn up dozens of examples.

I reinstalled the nvidia drivers found at /usr/local/bin and it runs fine. But when I type startx it still says that Server x isn't working properly. The error it gives me is..

Fatal Server Error:
no screens found

and...

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection Reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

Grrr. Any ideas? Would reinstalling X Server help?

And make sure that the files shown aren't empty or very small. Say less than 110 bytes, which is about the minimum size of a compressed tar file.

Thanks, the backup and then autoupgrade worked.

However, the post about making sure your backup is good wasn't posted by then. It works fine now, but I can't seem to get the program guide back running. Everything says "unknown (unknown)"

Sorry I did see this earlier, but when you changed your card, you needed to also edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and change the Driver "nvidia" if it is an nvidia card. You were only missing the ident of what to use.

I am not sure what driver the old Trident requires, but you can rest assured it was not the same

You may wish to take a look and see what it picked up with the upgrade, just for future notes.
