Post subject:  Finalizing HTPC build

Wasn't sure where to post this but, here it goes.

Ok, im finalizing my last for parts and software for my HTPC, and I need help deciding some things

Already have
AMD xp 2500+(Good enough?)
MachSpeed n2PAP-lite mobo(assuming good enough)
Geforce MX4000 Gcard(Good enough?)
CD-rom drive (Fine?)
Onboard sound on the mobo(work fine?)

Planning on purchasing
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6815116602
PVR 250. I heard that the 150 I wanted earlier would not work.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16822144102
80 Gig HD, will be moving recordings to File Server when they are done. Fine?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16820211119
Thats the Memory I will use (512MB)

Should I get a Wireless/IR keyboard?

Anything else hardware wise I forgot?

I will be using KnoppMyth as stated, will all the parts work?

One more thing, IM kinda confused about the installation.

With KnoppMyth, do I need a SQL server? I can't find the answer anywhere. Anything else I need to know?

Thanks guys.

KnoppMyth includes everything needed, so no you don't need an SQL server. I don't know what tuner card have/plan to purchase, so I cannot say it the 2500+ is "good enough". If you are planning on HDTV, then I'd highly recommend something beefier, else it should be good enough.

Im planning on using a PVR 250, so I can do the hardware encoding on the card. And there will be no HD encoding on this machine.

Why does it seem like so many people can't find this page for themselves?

So, it looks like all I will need is a wireless keyboard and mouse, and a case. Thanks for the help guys

FYI many people have trouble with wireless keyboards/mouses. Some USB keyboards work fine with knoppmyth others don't work at all. You pvr-250 will come with an IR remote. I think that is all you need.

I've used two different wireless keyboards with KnoppMyth with no problems at all. The key is that both are PS/2 keyboards not USB. It's the USB part that gves folks fits.

One more question. Ive been seeing people using PVR 150s, even though the manuals say I can't. Should I go ahead and take the chance and order one?

What manuals say you can't? Where are you getting this misinformation? Did you read the Wiki pages I pointed you at which quite specifically say that they work just fine? I've got one in my box, and probably about a third to a half of the folks around here have one too.

I read some FAQ that told me that. Anything else I will need before I order it?

Everything is ordered. When I install KnoppMyth, should I do it on a monitor, then move it to the tv? Or do it on the tv? Also, the refreshrate for all NTSC tvs is 29.97 right? So thats what I would set in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4?

No. See this example: http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=XF86ConfigForFX5200HowTo This should also work for the MX4000.

I think most (if not all) of us do the install on a monitor and then move the box to a TV. One final step you may need to do is the following:

In /etc/X11/ move XF86Config-4 to XF86Config-4.bak then move the XF86Config-4.nvidia-tvout to XF86Config-4. Depending on your setup you may not want/need to do that, but if you're running Composite or SVideo from your Nvidia card, that helps alot. Also if you take a close look at that file, you'll see overscan settings in it, might need to play with that to get things stretched perfectly.

Edit: after looking at that link in tjc's post above, it looks like that's a good Nvidia X config file, similar to the one Knoppmyth comes with.

Sorry I should have been clearer. The "no" was to the sync rate.

What does the sound connect through? I forgot to ask. I have a regular built-in computer sound setup, no SPDIF. How in the world do I connect the sound to the tv? Some kinda converter?
