My Svideo looks very good. But since I used my Myth box to replace my Progressive DVD player (Xine's quality was better than Toshiba 3950 on every DVD I tried) I'd like to use the 480I/P inputs on my TV.

Cheapest VGA transcoders I've found on the web were $199 (that does 480P, not the $99 that does only 480I without telling you).

Used Xbox is $130 + $20 for HDTV kit, and it can be modified for 480P with a 5 byte patch. But I want/need to use Xine because I must "brighten" the component signal before it hits my TV. Plus the Xbox can't read every disc and I don't think it's 733 Celery is enough horsepower, front what I hear, it barely works as a front-end with only 64MB (don't feel like soldering the extra 64MB).

ATI's $30 dongle is controversial. Works on 8500's, and I think 9500's and up. I only have a 9200 laying around. Plus installing ATI's linux drivers I think is over my head. And I think the dongle control is in the ATI windows drivers. A matter of getting the right frequencies from the chip (some use Powerstrip).... but we're in Linux here.

I think I've seen DVI to component cables, but I'm sure these are for something else.

Anybody pull this off?

ECS K7S5A, XP 1600+ @ 1200Mhz(9x133)/1.53Vcore, 512MB, 200GB
GF4MX440 64MB, 128-bit, Svideo out (43.63 drivers) to Apex 51" TV
PVR 250, v1.2, IVTV 0.1.9 (input switch script), 720x480 @ 4200/5000
SBLive! 5.1, homemade optical cable to Sony 595 receiver (Xine DVD)
RadioShack 25-2116 JP-1 lighted remote controls everything
"Demon" black, windowed case lighted red, blue fans & 7V
Acoustic Research A/V and cable system coax cables

well the easiest and cheapest way for you to go would be a vga to component converter. Note that is not a scan converter. The ones I am talking about don't fuss with the signal other than to change it from one media to the other, so you can go 720P or 1080I if you wish, you just have to get your modelines right in the XF86Config file. They can be had for $100-130. See this page.

As for the ati you are right linux can't use the component cable.

I think that link will help you alot.

Xsecrets, thanks for that link. :)

I didn't know a hardware transcoder that did 480p could be had for $108. The product is a bit dated, but if it works it'll be worth it. Says it won't work with a Panasonic HDTV, a little scary, maybe it won't affect me. Proper modeline for X would probably need to be gottten from a Windows box (newest Powerstrip even generates them) as my TV is not even HDTV, it's 4:3 but does support 480P.

Actually I've found a schematic to do the VGA > YPrPb conversion for 480p, looks rather simple to build, can save the $108 this way. Here's the link http://www.keohi.com/keohihdtv/interfaces/diytranscoder.html
Will let you know how it turns out.
