First had a AGP 8x MX4000 (and an older version of knoppmyth) card that after the auto-install would freeze the computer unless i used the vesa drivers, after doing ALOT of stuff i finally got it to work the nvidia drivers, now rebuilding everything and using the newest one and i forgot how i fixed it in the first place, i even switched to fx5200 AGP and still hangs if i use NVIDIA instead of vesa, using NV will just show a black screen but not hang. Please help i have spent days on this with no luck and i know it can be done i just forgot what all i did. Have reburned it as well and redownloaded it.

Good tips, it made my GF4mx420 less unstable and gave me a clue to find the following which makes my card completely stable:

Option "NoRenderAccel" "true"

It does not reduce any performance I'm aware of yet (atleast on SD TV).
