Hey,

I've got my box working (finally, yay!). Many thanks to the developers and the support from this forum for the dedication and willingness to help. I only have one last problem. The sound doesn't make any noise.

Here's my Information:
I have a ASRock K8NF4G-SATA2 Motherboard. This board has a NVIDIA GeForce 6100 north bridge, NVIDIA nForce 410 south bridge, and Realtek ALC850 AC'97 (8-Channel + line in and mic in) onboard audio. I also have an 'front panel' speaker out and microphone out connected. The manual says that both the front and rear connectors will work.

Now the problem: No audio. I have 6-channel speakers (but for now, I'm just plugging in the front 2-channel). While watching TV I tried plugging it into all 6 rear connectors and the two front connectors (just to make sure I had wired everything correctly). Nothing. Turned the speakers up really loud. Not even a whisper. I don't really know how else to diagnose the problem, so I am again, asking for your help. The syslog doesn't offer any help (to me).

Thank you all for your hard work!! YOU are what makes this an awesome project!

I did a little more testing and found that the recordings don't have sound recorded in them. I logged onto the MythWeb interface from another computer (with working sound) and downloaded a 10 minute LiveTV recording (News of GMU's Basketball Success, my school :-P). When I played the mpg file there was still no sound. I have a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-150MCE Model 1042 setup as a "MPEG-2 encoder card (PVR-x50, PVR-500)" using the "Tuner" input. The video works pretty good, but I get no audio. Any suggestions?

Tuner Card: WinTV-PVR-150MCE Model 1042

Wait a minute.
There is no sound on BoxA.
BoxB does have sound.
A recording from BoxB which has sound when played on BoxB but doesn't have sound when played on BoxA.
I would think the problem was with BoxA's audio output, not the recording of it.

OK... First, that doesn't help me. Second, you are dumb and didn't read what I said. A recording from BoxA doesn't have sound when played on BoxB or BoxA. So it could be either or both problems. I didn't think that my explanation was very confusing, but apparently it was (sorry for that). I'm going to try tjc's suggestion because he actually gives helpful comments.

So I tried tjc's suggestion, still no audio. However it changed a little.
The recordings have audio in them (streaming it sounds/looks OK, bad quality, but at least I get something), but still no audio output from the system. I searched more on the forums and tested a little more. When I tried to run alsamixer it returns the following error:
Code:
root@jester:~# alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

I don't know what else to look at or do (I can't seem to find much for audio troubleshooting here or on the wiki)... any links to audio troubleshooting?
Any suggestions of any kind?

If I've read your last post correctly it looks like an audio output problem!
Post the output from dmesg so that we can see what devices are created.

There is a topic in the MythTv docs for Troubleshooting Audio but it wont be of much help to you yet, as your problems run deeper.

The output from 'dmesg' is too long to post (I believe), so I'll just link to it Here. The sound is on the motherboard and is a Realtek ALC850 chipset (with 8 channels plus a mic in and a line in). Please see my original post for a link to the motherboard specs.
If you tell me what you look at/for and how you analize it, I could learn from this ;-). Thank you in advance.

Hi,
I also have an ASRock, K7S41 so it is abit different and not as fancy as yours however it is fussy to get audio on some Alpha versions. alsaconf would discover it and make it work (till reboot) also have to use alsamixer to unmute some settings. I still have no level control even though the indicator goes up & down. It does mute at the very minimum level. The A30 and > are a little better but still no control.

from alsamixer:
Card: SiS SI7012
Chip: C-Media Electronics CMI9761
View: Playback
Item: Master

I could not recommend my flavor of ASRock because of the audio and the componet layout cause issues when trying to put cards.

Maybe your problems are simular because of the ASRock designs?.
Mike
