I have a need to install some applications on my backend box ( 6.03 ). There are some version issues that keep me from using pacman ( For example, I have run "pacman -Sy proftpd" but it failed due to version dependencies. I have change the repositories and run pacman -Syu on a test box but still no good). When I tried to install proftpd using the traditional method (./configure; make; make install) I discovered that "make" was missing. I tried pacman -S base-devel but that failed - again dependency issue...

I need council on either installing "make" or suggestions on installing a newer version of proftpd than in the repositories (the version there is at least -1, maybe -2).

Thanks

What repos do you have in your pacman.conf? The LinHES repos do not have proftpd so it should have given an package not found error not a dependency error. What dependency issue did you see with base-devel. Did you try to install make alone: pacman -S make

Thanks for the quick reply. I changed pacman.conf to include several "extra" repos from arch web site . I installed proftpd which was the latest version (it had several dependency issues because apparently the arch install from linhes does not have all the latest required code - ex. libreadline.so.5). Anyway I just tried "pacman -S proftpd" and that worked. I now have proftpd running - thanks.
