Is anyone running 0.24 having strange issues with aspect ratio of videos in MythVideo? I feel like I might be the only one, since a (admittedly quick) google for the problem didn't result in anything.

I have been using the internal player in MythVideo since it started supporting VDPAU and have never had problems before. Now it appears that arbitrary videos in our library get squashed to 4:3 and yet others play fine. We haven't tried mplayer yet, but its getting annoying enough that I might have to resort to that ...

Never seen that. But hit, um, 'w' I believe it is to cycle through various aspect ratios, this should (temporarily) correct it.

Cheers for the advice. We can certainly fix it once the video's playing, but its frustrating that this hasn't been an issue before.

i am just curious if the arbitrary videos played without issue before upgrading to .24 and if the issue is repeatable on the same videos.

i have had some issue, but have not linked it to .24

doing a ffmpeg -i filename on the problem videos that i have watched have shown that while the reported DAR (display aspect ration) is 16:9, the reported PAR (pixel aspect ratio) is not 1:1, but rather 4:3

i gave up trying to 'fix' the videos with incorrect PAR as the only solution i could find was a lengthy ffmpeg transcode. it was easier to change the aspect ration within mythtv

I have not seen this in .24. Check the Video Aspect Override setting in Setup --> TV Settings --> Playback --> 2nd Screen.

I have "video aspect override" set to off, and "zoom" set to "auto detect (off)". Are these the default? I can't remember changing them.

With a bit of effort (switching from storage groups to nfs), mplayer is set as my default player and its working nicely.

edit: I had written "Somehow mythvideo thinks that the display is a different size to what mplayer thinks it is. I don't know how I could have stuffed that up ...", but that doesn't make sense. Some videos are playing at the correct aspect, others aren't.

I found a fix for this.

It turns out that MythVideo is now preferring the SAR found in the video stream over the one found in the container (it used to be the other way around). See this commit https://github.com/MythTV/mythtv/commit/2010c3a834419468f338240644896c26cd632f22.

Pretty much all of our video files are ones that I've transcoded from DVD or DVB using x264 (or mencoder). The older encodes don't have any SAR in the video stream and Myth is ignoring the one in the container. This tool http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1371205 (which I'm using through wine) can change the SAR in the video stream without another expensive transcode. I haven't looked at every file that's been "fixed", but the ones that I have looked at display correctly.
