I know it is dangerous to jump to conclusions but here goes...

It looks like the culprit is tied to the backup process and mythexport... See below.

I have addressed the issue (not fixed the root cause) by restarting the Mythexport daemon after every backup (cron job) - no memory problem since... I suspect other people have this problem but don't realize it...
