For some machines this is a problem is bootspash is enabled. Turn it off and see if that helps.

I also have bootsplash disabled on one of my machines and enabled on another and both have this problem. This is a major pain for me as I shut down my machines most nights remotely and thus this doesn't work.

Once or twice I have seen this when NFS was being used and a program had a lock on a file during shutdown. By any chance are the offending machines remote frontends or using NFS?

jams,
No not using any NFS I have seen another message that occurs during shutdown. Will try and capture it and post. It's something complaining that it can't write to a read only file. .....

I had NFS enabled but disabled it, and samba, with no help for this problem. This happens on both my SBE/FE and my MBE/FE. I think the message tscholl is referring is like mine. Here's a screenshot: https://app.box.com/s/3l2z8w5ylzi0wc2h5dg0/1/2250372689/19388549369/1

I run a number of Mythboxes, all IBMs ... Some models shut down properly, all the 9229s hang and have to be shutdown with the power button. So a model-specific problem.

Well I stumbled across something the other day. I have been running a WinTV-PVR-USB2 for several years and was in the process of changing channel line up. Long story but in the process of working on this I had unplugged the USB cable from the tuner, and did a shutdown -r and guess what!
It shutdown completely and then rebooted without a problem. If I don't unplug the cable it still hangs, unplug the device and shutdown works!
So at least I now know that it is a device that's that's creating my hang on shutdown.Don't know how to fix, so open to suggestions.

Well, I have no answers, but I am plagued with the same problem with my system. I cannot shutdown the system via software - I have an identical console log as @stevenj (i.e. the shutdown hangs after "runit: system reboot"). I was hoping to get ACPI shutdown and MythWelcome working, but this shutdown bug is a show-stopper! I tried mythbuntu on this hardware previously, and did not have the problem with that distro installed - I could shutdown just fine with it. Mythbuntu did not setup my Hauppauge PVR250 remote, though. I see many of you mention that you have a PVR250 or a Hauppauge remote of some sort, so that seems the likely culprit. Now that I have LinHES R8.1.1 installed (and the Hauppauge grey remote setup), I am seeing the hang in the shutdown. Any news - has anyone figured out how to get shutdown to work with the remote configured?

No solution yet for me. Hate this issue. I shut down my machines every night and have to manually go hold the power button to do so. If anyone can work on the issue and needs help testing/troubleshooting, I'm willing.

I had the same issue. Physically removing the pvr-250 from my system solved the problem. I was only using it for the ir receiver so it wasn't a big loss for me. I am using a hauppauge remote profile with a generic MCE ir receiver now with no issues. I also found that changing the remote type on the remote selection screen requires a reboot on my system more often than not to take properly. Hope that helps.

For those having the shutdown issue can you see if the task it is hanging on is consistent? Before shutdown: Code: ps aux > psList Then when you shutdown see if you can find that pid in the list and post what process it is.

@brfransen, if I can get the children off the Myth box tonight, I will try to get you some feedback. I appreciate your helpfulness to all of us users of LinHES. You are a dedicated supporter! I hope we can find the root cause of this shutdown issue.
BTW, In addition to using the PVR250's remote control, I also use it to watch/record from my VCR. We still have a lot of old analog VHS tapes. That is the holdout for me pulling out the card and going with a new remote...
