I have tried the old 'pkill xinit' to do it, but it doesn't work sometimes. I'll be pushed into tty1 where I can see the last daemons that loaded at boot instead of seeing the desktop.

Same goes for ctrl+alt+backspace.

What is the recommended way to restart x?

Not sure if there is a good answer to this yet, but there was some discussion and a flyspray ticket.

Rename /etc/sv/frontend/finish to /etc/sv/frontend/finish.original

Then get the file named "Modified_finish" from the above mentioned flyspray ticket comments area. Rename it to "finish" and copy it to/etc/sv/frontend/ so it becomes the new /etc/sv/frontend/finish

pkill xinit will work consistently everytime like just like in R5.5
