My wife finally did in the database by resetting the mythbox while it was running. Unfortunately my last backup was before I upgraded to 0.23 a little over a month ago. However, I had a clonezilla backup from just over a week ago so woohoo.

Everything is back and fine & dandy, except that when I look at my upcoming recordings, it is showing every episode of the programs I have configured instead of just the new episodes (I have the filter set to "exclude repeat episodes"). I have tried removing and recreating them to no avail. I see the same thing if I try to create a recording schedule for different programs as well.

Is this more likely to be a problem with the program data than the scheduled recording info? Would you recommend flushing the program data through mythfilldatabase and reinsert it?

It looks like your database doesn't have the "recorded programs" table populated correctly.

Is there any chance that your database skipped a table or two?

I ran
Code:
mythfilldatabase --refresh-all
and it appears to have cleared things up.

Unfortunately the corrupt database may have been a result of more than just a hard reset. I am having some issues where the playback will halt, looking at the errors.log I am seeing sata i/o errors (don't have the actual message in front of me now).

However, I checked the smartctl data and it showed no errors. I am wondering if it might be related to the motherboard instead, seeing as how this is the 2nd or 3rd hard drive where I have seen similar errors.

But at the same time I've noticed the hard drive will spin up, the activity LED will flash, then it will stall. Then after a few moments of silence it will repeat that. I'm not sure whether that could be caused by a fault on the motherboard or not.

When I had this problem in the past I tried a different SATA cable first and that didn't help. So I replaced the hard drive and the new one worked great for months. Interestingly enough I have had the old one in an external case for those same months and never had a problem with it.

Now I'm just rambling... I'll post exact error messages tonight.

Do you think there might be an overheating problem inside your myth box? That would cause disks to have a very short life, and I'd suspect it as the primary cause of premature disk failure.

In case you're now wondering about this, simply removing dust will generally solve the problem. A scheduled hardware maintenance window may be a good idea, where you could whip out the vacuum cleaner and relieve your fans of their burden.

The failed disks usually come back to life if they failed because of this.

Mike

Definitely the hard drive... I had a RAID 1 in my desktop computer so I just pulled one of those drives out and popped it into the mythbox and it has been fine since. I was actually wondering about heat myself as it is in an entertainment center that is enclosed. I added 2 120mm fans to the entertainment center which one is blowing in at the bottom and the other out at the top.

I don't know how accurate the RRD data is, but it does not show the hdd temp exceeding about 47C and I just exchanged some e-mails with Western Digital tech support and he said it should be fine as long as it doesn't exceed 60C. I was somewhat concerned that it went from about 27-45 within an hour of startup, but he said that's ok. I may look into hard drive cooling anyway because I know that case gets stuffy.

I've hardly ever had hard drive failures in other computers and this is the 3rd time I've had a hard drive fail in this mythbox in 2.5 years. Of those 3, only the first one showed errors in the S.M.A.R.T. data.

It might be a better idea to have the one blow in and the other blow out at the top and to put a cheap air filter on the bottom one to keep dust down. They sell some foam type air filters for window unit air conditioners for like $5 that you can cut down to size or you could buy a 120mm air filter online.

I wonder if it may be a power supply issue, because the hard drives seem okay in an external case. So I'm going to try replacing the power supply as it was included with the case and is 3-4 years old.

That's incredible, really. The PSU may be at fault. Make sure you replace it with a nice quiet one :-)

Also, if you can, get a UPS.

It's a microatx supply so I am somewhat limited on options :(

However, I have one on the way from Newegg which should be here tomorrow or Thursday.

I've had a UPS installed for a couple of years now so I shouldn't have any problems with the incoming power.

Anyhow, I hope to have this resolved soon... so long as the new power supply isn't a dud... and so long as the new power supply doesn't fry everything in a blaze of glory.

Just installed the new PSU, everything powered up and nothing started on fire. Time will tell how the hard drive behaves...

10 days after replacing the PSU and zero DVR issues (knock on wood). I think I FINALLY found the culprit.
