Post subject:  Using an SA Explorer 8300HDC with Myth

Hi all. I live in SE Michigan. I got an offer from WOW cable that included the STB mentioned in the title. It is a DVR. I figured I could retire my Myth box (LinHes 6.03) for the supplied DVR. After using myth for several years I quickly found out the DVR is a brain-damaged piece of junk. Myth is so vastly superior in every way one can think of. I want to go backto myth. The DVR has two tuners. Has anyone used this STB before?

One of the main things I want to know is how to address the tuners separately. The way it works by default is that (like myth) sets the channel on the tuner not being used for recording. If I use an irblaster, the STB won't know that myth is recording a program and will change the channel on the tuner that myth is using instead of the second tuner. An IR code file would be nice too. My googling has yet to find any answers to my questions.

I need to mention that this box has an eSATA port for an extra drive and a USB port on the front panel but *NO* firewire port.

I have an 8300 but it is not hooked up to myth. Even if you could select the tuner it is not obvious to me how you would connect it to Myth and a TV simultaneously as the outputs from the DVR are always generating the same output.

Without a firewire port you are pretty much restricted to IR as well for channel changing.

Personally I just went and bought two SA4250s as direct feeds into my myth system. We can buy them in my region and at the time they were on promotion for $100 each so no big deal.

I finally came across a code table for a SA 8300HD that works with my HDC. The channel numbers work but my test emulating a POWER button click failed. All I really need are the numbers. As near as I can tell there is no output for the second tuner so it's a one tuner box for the purposes of mythtv. I can post it if anyone is interested.

Now I have another IR problem... but that's another thread.

I think it would be a good idea to post your information. The ideal place would be in the wiki: http://linhes.org/bugs/projects/linhes/wiki

You should just exchange the 8300 for another tuner since you are paying extra for the DVR and not using it.

Instead of putting it on the wiki, I'll just point to where I found it. It was already in the LIRC remote archives.

That would be true except that

1) I am using it (the reasons are irrelevant)
2) I am not paying for it. It's part of a WOW promotion
