I would like to help my neighbor do this. He has a standalone mbe/frontend combo, 6.03, works fine. I thought I'd play with it at home first before breaking his system.

My Droid X can see my LH server using it's DNLA app & what's built into the Myth server. I see all the listings of all the media but can't play anything (no errors on server logs that I can see and just generic "Cannot play media" type errors, even mp3s cannot be played). I thought I'd try fuppes. Using it, I can also list all media and play mp3s on my phone. The video & recordings don't work but that is probably because fuppes appears not to be transcoding the video on the fly (see "Build Status" from fuppes web interface below). But wouldn't this be required for the PS3 or for almost any client? There aren't many clients that can play the vast array of formats we all put on our LH servers I would think. So then I tried Totem on my linux box but when it tries to browse the fuppes server for a list of media it causes fuppes to segfault!

*Sigh*. Has anyone done anything like this successfully? Suggestions? Thanks.

Paul

Probably not much help.

But im running the same standalone mbe/frontend combo in my lounge.

I have a ps3 in the family room that accesses myth through the inbuilt myths media server. So i cant watch live tv just recordings and videos.

On my ps3 i dont remember having to do anything. I just go accross to videos and then it shows up there as the name of my mythtv. I then get to recordings or videos.

This is using wireless.

I"m confused are you not able to playback content on your PS3? or are you trying to get playback on your phone?
I know the guy from "MythTV Cast" the podcast tried to write an android app and found there was no good way to do the transcoding on the fly with current hardware. http://tlltsarchive.org/archives/MythTV ... sode24.ogg

As mentioned, the phone was just me testing at home. My goal was to help my neighbor use his PS3 as a front end.

I don't know why his PS3 couldn't see Myth's uPNP server like Digriz77. He has the latest PS3 firmware & is on a wired network. However, it is my understanding that Myth doesn't transcode anything thus most files won't be playable at all. When I did the below the TV recordings were playable, fyi Digriz77, & thx for your posting.

So, because he has a PS3, I figured his best bet would be "PS3 Media Server" (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/). Here's what I did to install it:

Quote:
sudo pacman -Sy jre
sudo reboot
wget http://ps3mediaserver.googlecode.com/fi ... 0.0-b2.tgz
tar xzf pms-generic-linux-unix-1.40.0-b2.tgz
cd pms-generic-linux-unix-1.40.0
./PMS.sh

Reboot was for java path changes to take effect. The current "stable" release had a bug preventing it from working, the above version is beta.

So, with no further tweaking, it sort-of worked. The PS3 found the server immediately and I could browse root to /myth etc. Probably 2/3 of files could be played (he has a real mix of formats etc), I was hoping for a higher percentage but oh well. To have this auto-start on reboot, should I put this line in /etc/runit/1.local:

Code:
/home/mythtv/pms-generic-linux-unix-1.40.0/PMS.sh &

or what? Thanks.

OK it's a security hole but if you have Universal Plug and Play turned on in the router it makes things easier DLNA I thought I posted that above but I guess not. The security hole is that if you get bug on your system it could open ports and change lots of router settings without the need of a password or any kind of OK from the user. Here Security Expert Steve Gibson is discussing how bad it is to have UPNP turned on to the outside world but it can also be bad on LAN if you get a virus on the LAN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlrytRM8 ... age#t=584s

Thx Mattblatt.

I saw a lot of postings from ppl on the web turning on uPNP on their router, even to the point of installing DDWRT as uPNP support didnt work on their factory firmware. I'm completely confused by this - why on earth should that be necessary? I would have assumed that that would only be required to access the data from outside your home network.

In this case, we can now "see" the media server and play most media so I assume turning on such a setting on the router (if he even has one) wouldn't help this any, maybe for Myth but I assume not PS3 Media Server.

I cant explain it. but yeah mine just works. I can play all tv recordings. I even can play all my videos avi. The only thing i cant get to play is my music collection. unsure why but never realy persued that is int wasnt important to me.

I use the medain server on my Apple TV 2 that has been hacked to put on
XBMC. comes up identicle on both.

I did have codec packs installed prior to getting these working so maybe that was it.
