Volume commands do not change the volume during TV playback or while watching TV. I seem to remember this not being the case before I loaded the sound drivers and experimenting with ALSA and the alternative documented here:

Volume commands do work when playing back videos (video playback is performed with different video player).

Is there a control \ configuration mechanism that links volume commands to actaully changing the volume?

there is a check box in the MythTV sound options section that turns volume control off or on. (off in my case, I can't think of a good reason for mythTV to control volume my DVD player doesn't have a volume knob)
