Post subject:  USB Keyboard - Solved

I'm trying to switch to a wireless USB keyboard on my new 7.2 build. Everything comes up but It doesn't see the keyboard.
Any ideas? Do I need to install any additional packages?

Thanks

Tim

What type of wireless? Infrared, RF, Bluetooth?

It's an Infrared. I have two, one with a wired keyboard & mouse IR receiver, and the new one with the usb IR receiver.

The new keyboard works on the wired receiver, and I tested the new usb IR receiver on a windows box and it works fine. there. So I have verified that the hardware is good.

Next I swapped usb port with my usb tuner an booted from the 7.2 install CD and the keyboard worked fine. Then after rebooting again. Now the keyboard works. Don't know why it didn't work the first time.

Well it's quit working again. It will works to hit escape at the grub prompt but then quits working somewhere along the line.

At this point I'm thinking it another issue with udev configuration.

Can you try attaching the receiver via a powered usb hub? I had a flaky ir receiver that didn't miss a beat after being connected to a powered hub.

The receiver is fine every time to the mboard and to the grub prompt. So I don't think the receiver is flaky. I'll see if I can borrow a powered hub but I'm not holding my breath. Argggggggggggg ... Need to get this box into production.

Looks like this is an udev / arch problem.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=136508
Also found several other OS' with similar udev issues.

Maybe the dev's could look into this.

Ok here is a little more information.

Looked at my Xorg.0.log and grep for keyboard

So I guess thats why the keyboard quits working. And yes it breaks my HD5500 as well.

Creating a xorg.conf keeps X from configuring the HD5000 as a keyboard but the USB keyboard sitll doesn't work.

Did you sync it? My USB wireless keyboard seem to have two failure modes:

- Won't work with BIOS or the boot loader when dongle is connected via a USB hub. Still works with the OS and X.

- Won't work at all until the dongle and keyboard are synced (say after a battery change or the like).

I assume that they are sync'd since the lights on the receiver show power, shift lock and scroll lock (when I press them) when I am at the bios setup screens. If I look at the bios settings under the USB section is shows that a USB Keyboard and mouse are attached.

When I get to the grub screen I can esc, scroll, and select on the grub screen. After I select an option and hit enter that's it.

It did work once. But then didn't work again after I rebooted. A google search finds others with the same problem after the latest updates.

Another update. I decided to try the USB IR receiver on my other Myth box. It's also at R7.2 but this machine has no other usb devices attached.

IR receiver works fine. I can find it when I do a
Code:
cat /proc/bus/input/devices

But don't know how to find it using udevadm. I can't seem to find the right path to get the information. Does anyone know what the query should look like?
If I can get that information I think I can write a udev rule for the new box.

Well I threw in the towel and re-installed with the keyboard installed. Works fine now. The problem had to be some module that was missing.

Oh well Solved -- not the best fix but it worked.

glad you fixed it however I can't replicate your fix and I am having a similar issue. I upgraded to 7.4 and both keyboard/mice were working fine. I tried to do a restore and it broke my keyboards.

Don't know how I missed your post. Did you ever find a resolution?
