Post subject: | disabling lirc |
My FE machine uses a serial ir blaster for changing channels. It also uses an old pvr-350 for capturing the stream and as the remote ir receiver. Thus I have two lirc daemon's running. This machine's FE display also has an annoying habit of crashing if not used for a while. (i.e. come home from work, turn on the tv, press any button on remote, mythfrontend crashes, I get up and press alt-m, things work fine.) I've grown accustomed to it, but I'd bet the underlying cause is lirc. Hence I want to move away from it. So how do I get the ir receiver and/or ir blaster working without lirc? I would presume the remote control could be replaced by a bluetooth keyboard, but is there another way? Thanks, Abs |

I believe if you create an empty /etc/runit/lirc.sh file then lirc service will not start. Then if your remote has an in-kernel driver then X will receive a key mapped value via ir-keytable autmatically. If your remote does not have an in-kernel driver then you will need either a supported remote or a keyboard. There are many of the little bluetooth mini keyboards around. To some extent this is also described in: http://linhes.org/projects/linhes/wiki/ ... tomization Happy Easter! |

I was looking at this badboy. The ir keyboard is the size of a remote and has a glidepoint mouse too. http://www.amazon.com/FAVI-Entertainmen ... 847&sr=8-3 |

Here is another one at Amazon that also looks interesting, especially if you are used to using a Blackberry keyboard, although I don't know if the multi-touch will work on Linux. |

If your running an irblaster I don't think you can get rid of lirc entirely unless you can change the channel another way (firewire, serial..) I was running a serial blaster and receiver on the same port allowing for only one instance of lirc. Might help. Also as a work around, myth sometimes locks up when the kids try to play a dvd so I setup remote button to kill mythfrontend and restart it. Doesn't fix the problem but it is convenient for non-technical users. |

My experience is much the same as this review especially the first two CONs: http://goo.gl/tVqQS [Amazon] but the lazer pointer is great - our cat, HMF[His Masters Feline] Sweet Woodruff aka Woody, loves chasing it. |

I have absolutely no issues with this keyboard. And you're right, the cat is losing weight running into walls. |
