On the LIRC website they have two conf files for streamzap they are very similar I'm not sure what the difference is http://sourceforge.net/p/lirc-remotes/c ... lircd.conf
http://sourceforge.net/p/lirc-remotes/c ... lircd.conf

Check out this section It looks like they have already depricated the chevron symbols and listed them as #Was

Code:
          KEY_STOP                 0x19                      #  Was: STOP
          KEY_PREVIOUS             0x1A                      #  Was: |<<
          KEY_NEXT                 0x1B                      #  Was: >>|
          KEY_RECORD               0x1C                      #  Was: RECORD
          KEY_REWIND               0x1D                      #  Was: <<
          KEY_FORWARD              0x1E                      #  Was: >>
          KEY_RED                  0x20                      #  Was: RED

In peeking at a few other remotes it looks like they (LIRC) have standardized on KEY_* and standardized the common buttons.

Obviously there are weird remotes with weird buttons but the major ones should be standardized.

From my experience I prefer it custom. What happens when the button does not exist? With Lirc, create a button and then it works....
