I plan to replace an existing R5.5 slave BE/FE unit with a completely new box. My thoughts are to shut down the old box and install R6 clean on the new box giving it the old hostname and IP address. Then copy the recordings from the old hard drives over to it (probably by installing the old drives in the new box one at a time and mounting them). I know I'll have to remove a few directories from my storage group for the new box since it will only have two drives for recordings and the old one had many more.

I just want a sanity check to see if this sounds like a correct way to do this or will this procedure cause problems? Am I missing anything or is there a better way to do this?

My existing Master BE/FE unit is still on R5.5 and I'll be replacing that box also at a later time.

Well, your fresh database will not be aware of your recordings nor any other settings. Therefore, after your fresh install, do the following:
1 Rsync your /myth directory over with preserved ownership.
2 Run a database backup on the old box and transfer it to the new one.
3 Configure hostname and IP to final settings.
4 Restore your database or possibly better - do an upgrade to the same version (R6).

That should do the trick reasonably. You will probably find old settings for receivers and stuff so you will need to setup your receivers and channels again.
Also any /etc/fstab settings, such as external mounts, will have to be entered again.

Just prior to celebrating any success - run the backup script. Then celebrate!

Good luck!
/Chris
