Post subject:  Best way to copy an install?

I have two drives in my box both partitioned with a root, swap, and myth partitions. The larger newer drive does not have anything on the root partition. I would like to move/copy my root partition from the smaller older drive to the new drive.
What is the best easiest way to do this?

Thanks

I'm assuming the goal is to get a bootable image?

Using "cp -ax" will copy all the files, then you would need to run the grub setup to get the initial boot record written.

You can also use a dedicated system repair CD like PartEdMagic with ddrescue or the like to copy the raw image and then munge it to match the new hardware.

In both cases beware of mount points and the like that use UUIDs which will need to be updated.

Having used a variety of methods over the years I tend to start with a file level copy rather than an image copy, since it has the side effects of reorging and defragging the file system. The "special" info like boot records is generally easy to add later.

I would think Clonezilla would help? Throw in a little GParted for good measure... :-)... Google them, they may prove very useful.

Post subject:  Acronis True Image

I use Acronis True Image 10 (which is now a free download) to make Linux hard drive clones. Acronis creates a Live CD, which what I use to make my clones. The Live CD has a GUI interface and a Wizard to guide you. It will make a bootable clone of an entire drive - all partitions at once. The disk clone boots and behaves like the original. If you are copying from a smaller drive to a larger drive, it will allow you to stretch the partition on the new drive.
