Hello,
I am doing a fresh install of LinHES on a known working computer:
Intel Celeron 2.4 CPU
ASUS P4P800S MB
3 x digital tuner cards
1 x HDD
1 x CDROM drive

I can install and run 6.02 ok but all other new releases do not. The newer releases seem to all use the same installer.

Everything installs ok then it prompts for Reset or Power off.
Once the computer is rebooted there is a LinHES boot screen showing how much is loading in percentage.
It gets to 100% and just sits there.
If I press F2 for verbose mode, the last thing I can see is the line:
DATE xx xx xx NTPDATE: adjust time server
Parent daemon running

It must be so close to starting, can someone tell me why it is not?

I know I had a similar problem with 6.03 the installer for 6.02 must have been more forgiving.

Hi,

If you had a similar problem, how did you fix it?

I also tried installing 6.02 and then updating to 6.03 but it came up with FAILED running system config. Once I reset the computer it would sit at the same line:
Parent daemon running

Do you know of any logs I could look at? and how I would access them? It is hard to know what the problem is when no errors come up. The system is still running as I can press the power button and it will input commands to shut down the system.

Go to /var/log and check the time stamps. If you use:
Code:
ls -trl

The most recently updated logs will be at the bottom of the list.

It almost sounds like ntpd is hanging due to some networking problem or other configuration issue.

I tried typing in

ls -trl

but it did not do anything. I tried another command

pacman --query (is that right?)

but that did not do anything either.

Maybe verbose mode is not a terminal?

It would seem the network is running ok as I noticed today when I had another computer on that is connected to the same network an icon popped up saying UPnP network is found do you want to connect to it etc.

I have also tried using a different HDD and video card. Still does the same thing has the lines:

/usr/bin/tablet -encode
parent deamon running.

I thought you already had a console session for some reason... Oh where to begin...

There are several ways to boot into a minimal running environment. Any thing from booting from the CD and mounting the HD, to giving the boot loader options that tell it only to go to single user mode. For starters try switching to another virtual console with Ctrl-Alt-F2 or Ctrl-Alt-F3. If the system has come up far enough for those to work that's the simplest thing to try.

To boot into single user mode with grub you can either put "1" (for run level 1) or "single" (single user mode) at the end of the boot options or "init=/bin/bash" (rather than starting runit as process 1, start bash).

Instructions for using the CD as a rescue disk have been covered in various places already so I won't describe that for now.

I could not do any commands, so I have re installed without Splash. I can now input commands.

By pressing ALT and F2 I can get a command promt and login to Root.

I had a look at the logs in /var/log by using cd /var etc.

I used the command less <nameoflog> to view the logs.

Alot of the logs were repeated content, I don't know what I'm looking for?

In Everything.log and others it stated:

AMI Bois may be corrupt Low RAM working it around.

In auth.log:

Fail login 'mythtv'

pam_get_uid no such user

Xorg.0.log:

Fatal sever error
cannont establish any listing sockets.

Erorrs.log:
invaild host address ignored

Also today when I booted I got one extra line

parent deamon running

mount nfsd

Also I can log into mythweb from another machine on the network but no other network access happens.

Ok I have had a chance to get back to this.... and I think I have found the problem....

Seeing that I could only get 6.02 to run I thought I would just run that and not worry about the later releases for now. I setup everything fine and recorded a few shows to see if it worked ok, which it did.

Some of the settings I choose when installing 6.02 did not seem to stay when the system rebooted for the first time. One was running the Myth Frontend. I had always unticked this as I don't need it, I am installing a Master Back End and accessing it over the web etc.

I went back into the setup and unticked it (run the frontend) and rebooted, it got to 87% and if I pressed F2 it just said "Parent daemon running" just like the others!

So I then I decided to do a fresh install of 6.04, this time when installing it I ticked to run the Myth Frontend and it boots 100% !

So it this a bug with LinHES? by not selecting Run Mythtv frontend it will not fully boot? I guess the only reason I got 6.02 to run is because it did not remember my setting of not running the Mythtv frontend where as the later releases remember correctly.
