Post subject:  bootable USB flash drive from ISO?

The current LinHES FAQ says that you can use "dd" to copy the install ISO to a USB flash drive to make a bootable flash drive. From what I know of bootable ISOs vs. USB storage devices, that doesn't sound correct to me. In any case, I tried and it didn't work on several machines on which I tried it. Has anyone managed to boot a USB flash drive created this way? Details of exact partitions, commands etc. would be appreciated. Thanks!

I was able to create a bootable USB to install the latest LinHES on some frontend only machines using Windows 7 and UNetbootin (also available for Linux).

Actually very easy on Windows:
1. Download the image you want to "burn"
2. Run UnetBootin
3. Select Disk Image option
4. Select Downloaded Image
5. Select USB Drive
6. Let'er rip (press OK)

Then setup your computers BIOS to load from external media (or usb, what every options it has). Restart the system and it should load from the USB. I seen a post around here that made mention of UNetBootin, but I can not find it at the moment. Will dig later, and update post if I find it.

I tried Unetbootin, I got it to work with the LinHES 6.01 ISO. I would recommend this method to anyone who needs to install via USB flash.

Well I create bootable USB drives all the time from the iso.

"dd if=./linhes.iso of=/dev/sde" where sde is the flash drive.

For some drives it helps to make a dos partition first and then use
dd if=./linhes.iso of=/dev/sde1

And of course some USB drives just will not boot, it's as simple of that. The drives that have U3 installed will not boot, until the software is removed.
