Currently my 6.04 is running well, so I can stick with that for a while. I probably should have got a smaller drive in hindsight. Will 8.x support GPT?
BTW graysky, what did you retire to after 6.04? :)

No! Rule of computer spend: buy for the future, not the present. A life span of an HDD is 5+ years after all.

My system is stock Linhes 7.4. Think of this as an enhancement, the OS uses fdisk and the master boot record (2TB max) and does not have the capability to account for new large (GPT type) drives. It will be updated in the future (Jams). Right now the tool works fine for storage group drives.

What bootloader does LH use, RX? A related question: what is the web interface to the LH repos? I had it bookmarked a long time ago but can't seem to find it now. Basically, what is the LH equalivant of https://www.archlinux.org/packages

If the bootloader is a modern version of Grub, I believe that nothing would stop a user from manually partitioning via gdisk and installing the bootloader, then rsyncing an active install of LH over to the larger drive, no?

<= R7 uses grub .97 R8=> uses grub2

cgit.linhes.org is the closest thing

Regarding greater then 2TB partitions
For the OS drive gpt is not supported by the install process. This is true for both r7 and r8.
The partition code for install is a bit dated, but now that parted has caught up it will be possible to support larger drives. But it won't be for R8 as it's to close to release to be making any major changes like that.
There is nothing stopping you from making that conversion with gdisk after the install has completed. Reinstalling grub is also straight forward, there is empty space at the beginning of the drive to create the bios boot partition. The media partition is defined last so expanding it after conversion is also straight forward.
Personally I don't think consumer drives should really be trusted to hold that much data, but to each his own.

For DATA drives, partitions larger then 2TB are supported
