Hi,

Thanks the LinHES developer Team and the forum members for the new LinHES 8.1-11
(I make a donation over PayPal, linux software is free to use, but many user take time to make the new system up and running)
I use all version of KnoppMyth and LinHES, now have a upgrade from 7.4 to 8.1-11

The frontend hardware is the same, I only use a new hard drive.

On the version 7.4 I can use the digital audio with a DVI-to-HDMI adapter.
The sound card (S/PDIF-OUT) is connected to the graphics card (S/PDIF-IN) with a internal S/PDIF cable.

On the new version 8.1-11 with the same hardware- and software settings I can use only the analog output.
I like the old graphics card 8400, I can view HD satellite channel records (HD720p) with vpdau.

Question: Any hints to fix this or is time to buy new frontend hardware with HDMI Output?

Thanks for any hint for solution

This is my frontend system:

hardware: FUJITSU SIEMENS, ESPRIMO E, AND Athlon 64 X2 3800+, onbard audio disabled
graphics card: MSI PCIe NX8400GS, 512M DDR2, D-Sub, DVI-I, HDMI Ready
Video Output Function:Dual DVI-I with HDMI (DVI to HDMI adaptor)
nvidia-310.19-2
sound card: ASUS Xonar DS PCI 7.1 Audio Card (Xonar DS/A)

TV: Samsung UE40C7700 with 2 PC Connection type
HDMI1(DVI) (works with LinHES 7.4 with video AND digial audio over DVI-HDMI adapter)
PC (DVI) with extra Audio IN plug (works with LinHES 8.11 and analog audio)

In alsamixer the S/PDIF is not mute and to use the digital out over DVI :
Code:
/etc/asound.conf
pcm.!default {
 type hw
 card 0
 device 1
}

Code:
aplay -l

There are some configuration settings in

\Service Menu\MYTHTV Settings\Setup\Audio

\Service Menu\MYTHTV Settings\Setup\Audio\Advanced Audio

also consider getting a video card with HDMI it would be an upgrade since your TV is mainly HDMI

310 introduced some issues with HDMI audio (for example: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1206009)

Try up/downgrading your driver version. 304.116 works for me with a Geforce 210, don't know about your 8400GS.

The issue I see is that your aplay -L output doesn't list your graphics card as an audio output at all, so nothing will try to use it as such. But if it worked in earlier versions that may be due to the driver as well, or that may be the expected result when using the soundcard's S/PDIF as a passthrough to the graphics card.

Thanks for the hint to update nvidia driver,
Please do NOT try with on your working Myth Frontend
I test the update from the repo core-testing/nvidia
Code:
version 310.19-2   to  331.49-1.

This have a dep on the linux kernel from core-testing/linux
Code:
version  3.6.7-1  to    3.13.7-1

With the new kernel version my old legacy hardware have problems with power mangement
Code:
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 21 on CPU 0.
Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue
NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x12:0x2b:1831)
NVRM: rm_init_adapter failed for device bearing minor number 0
NVRM: nvidia_frontend_open: minor 0, module->open() failed, error -5

To fix this, I try to change kernel boot parameter
Code:
/etc/default/grup
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet"
#2014-04-02
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet acpi=off nmi_watchdog=0 pcie_aspm=off"

and write a new grup.conf file, but no change in kernel.log, now get kernel panic
Code:
Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=557b7d4c-4031-4ae0-ba9d-b379517f4fa7 ro quiet splash init=/sbin/runit

I change the MSI 8400GS to a ZOTAC 8400, the error is the same

Now i change back the repo to "core" and "extra"

Then I check the nvidia web site, there is a "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-331.49.run" file for download.
Question: Is there a HOWTO for Linhes to put newer or older version of nvidia driver on a frontend?

I may be way off here but this is how I understand that your 7.4 install worked. You have this http://www.msi.com/product/vga/#hero-overview video card that does not have an audio card. You have the HDMI adapter sold by MSI for the card that allows you to plug in the SPDIF out from the motherboard into the HDMI adapter and it slipstreams the audio into the HDMI connector with the VIdeo.
IF that is what is going on then your video card won't ever show up as an audio output. You instead need to configure in Service Menu->LinHES settings->Audio-> select your motherboard's SPDIF output. Then after you have tested the audio working for the computer, move to setting up the audio for just MythTV Service Menu->MythTV Settings->Audio.
