I have been trying to setup a frontend only machine, but the process always fails. The last line in dmesg.log is "Adding 1926140k swap on /dev/sda2 ..." after mounting sda5 and sda6. The main xfs partition is sda7.

I typically use hardware from our local recycler (affectionately referred to as the "computer barn"), and what they have now is a wall of Dell 760 Optiplex machines, probably from local schools. I had to go through a couple of boxes to find one that would work at all, and they all have old ATI videocards that will only support installation with the nomodeset option. And although the bios seemed to have no problem recognizing the harddrive, LinHES wouldn't seem to find it reliably until I plugged the cable into the SATA3 port. After several failed attempts at installation, I was able to run the frontend from the CD installation menu, and that seems to operate just dandy ... as long as no one turns off the machine.

It also seems that I am unable to connect to the LinHES welcome screen from another computer, nor am I able to log in via SSH, and I can't seem to figure out how to start sshd on it. Not sure where to go from here ...

sounds like bad hardware. Somewhere between your motherboard and the hard drive. Try swapping the SATA cable, then the Hard drive, and then the motherboard if you have to... heck it might even be power.
