Is there a way to install R8 over top itself without touching the recordings & database? I had something wrong with my drive and had to do a fsck /dev/sda1 and now it won't boot. I try to login to the 2nd console and it gives me a "PAM failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort" So I am sure I screwed something up.

Yes you can repair an install by running the R8 ISO again. When you get to the Upgrade or Full Install page select "Upgrade" It will erase the system partition and recreate it. It also saves all you system settings. |

That worked really easy. Hardest part was getting the image to burn right. I tried a DVD, and then 3 times on a USB drive (unetbootin, followed by dd (Virtual linux machine) and finally USBWriter) After that all I had to do is re-setup my sound |
