Hello forum!
I have had to upgrade my FE:s and backend from 8.4 or 8.5 - can't remember. The upgrades completed without errors, but one of my frontends does not start all the way:

Another frontend gets into the same situation sometimes when I use the update function in the menu system. This is what prompted me to upgrade in the first place.
I always use "force VESA drivers", as I have never had any luck with the standard install.

What should I look for?

There seem to be 3 problems that aren't related so I think they are just symptoms of something bigger but I'm not smart enough to figure out.
1) "unknown key type rsa1" is an error after it started SSH.
2) It can't start lircd so it can't run irexec
3) The time from ntpd is different than the system clock. It looks like the NTPD is getting a time from March 6th 2018 and that's all sorts of odd. (maybe I'm reading it wrong)

I agree with your observations, but not sure what to do with them.

1 "unknown key type rsa1". I would understand if that presented problems reaching the system via ssh, but it should not prevent the GUI from loading? Besides, it is in fact possible to ssh to the box.
2 irexec was never configured, since there is no serial port on this system. I assume this is OK?
3 NTPD looks really weird. There is no time server configuration to do during install, so this is beyond my control.

Still struggling...

I'm not sure what is going on, but I would think that some logs would have clues. Have you checked the Xorg log? Mine is located at:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Particularly any lines containing "(EE)" may complain if a it is a driver issue or something similar.

There was no xorg.log in this system. X never tried to start, it seems.
Today I had a go on it again and reinstalled, this time trying the default option that usually fails for me. But it went well and this FE is now up and running again.
