It looks like with rebates and such the geforce 8400 and the 210 are about the same price on newegg. Which chipset should I buy. I can't see a real difference between them.

Neither of them support HD on VDPAU so I wouldn't recommend either. Assuming the list below is up to date.

Actually I think the wiki confirms that both of these should work fine

I updated the link but I think that the wiki page has the info I needed.

The GeForce 8400 is a pretty 'slow' card compared to the 210, so IF you can afford the 210, buy it.

I'm not messing with VDPAU yet, but there IS a difference with CUDA processing. I fold on these cards. I'm still using 6100's for my main video displays.

On the contrary, they both work great with VDPAU. I use a PCI (not e) based 8400GS & it has been flawless for me.

However the 210 is a bit faster which I'm not sure you'll even notice but why buy slower when you can buy faster.

But many of the 210s have fans which I would avoid given the choice.

Actually it looks like there are fanless options, one low profile ready & one which claims to be super silent (both attractive features). Get one of them.

VDPAU works fine on my 8400, but when I change my resolution from 720p to 1080i, then I notice the video studder a bit with the on screen display when it fades away. I suppose a faster card would work better, but until overscan correction works at 1080i, I'll stay at 720p with the slower 8400.

If you read the VDPAU charts on the MythTV wiki closely you'll see that while the 8400 supports VDPAU it doesn't support the maximum feature set. The 210 does but apparently won't quite do 2x framerates at full HD.

8400 - supports feature set A with some later chips supporting B
210 - supports feature set C.

I'd look at the fanless 220 based cards, or possibly one of the GT 430 (Fermi) based cards aimed at set top box applications since they're supposed to be pretty efficient (less power, less heat, easier to cool). At least one maker has a fanless version.

I suppose "flawless" was a bit optimistic of me. I get the above too when I bring up the OSD for any reason like skipping ahead etc. Hard to say if that wouldn't happen on a faster card tho.

I wonder what the different feature sets really mean, i.e. how are they used in VDPAU etc. I'm quite happy with my P4 + 8400 @ 720p.

I recently picked up a 240 for $15 after rebate. Not using it like now as my P4 is AGP only but I'll use it at some point...

The Nvidia wiki has a details of what the feature sets mean. C adds MPEG4 support among other things.
