A report on a New install on a new to me machine plus a new video card.
I was given this older box it has a AMD 939 CPU slot. I had a dual core AMD 64 X2 that I was able to slip in. And I added an Asus Nvidia GT430 card to the PCI-E slot.
I had issues from the start with this install I had to run the CD in debug mode to get the live cd to boot at all. I had issues with the NIC (not sure if they are Linux or board issues yet) I had to install a pci 10/100 card that I had around. Finally got it to install and then the X would hang because the new Card didn't like the old drivers. Once I figured out that the Nvidia drivers were to blame I hit ALT F2 and did a
Code:
 sudo pacman -Sy nvidia
and got the new Nvidia drivers loaded. So far so good everything seems to be working.

I just put a GT430 in my R6.02 box, and I was running into the same problem with X not starting until I ran across your post and updated the nvidia driver as you suggested. So thank you!

But I still can't get the HDMI audio to work. Have you? When I use aplay, I see only the on-board audio.

You probably need to update your ALSA driver. I've posted instructions on how to do it around here somewhere with PKGBUILD files and the rest. Try these two threads...

Yes I use the onboard optical port and I use a DVI to HDMI adapter cable B/C I wanted the audio to go to my Amp which does not have HDMI ports. Now that I'm typing this out I don't remember why I didn't just get an HDMI cable. ;D
