Useful keywords/tools - It looks like if xmodmap can't be coerced into doing what you want you'll need to build your own package.

xev - (included) to find the X event produced
xmodmap - (included) utility for modifying keymaps and pointer button mappings
--------------------
xbindkeys - (external) an X event mapper, there are arch packages that you can build.
btnx - (external)
actkbd - (external)

Yes that does look promising. I also found a page that describes building a script that makes xmodmap work. I also found that the windows key is recognized by fluxbox/keys as mod4 a special key like ctl, alt, & shift. So there is another key an orange one at the top left that is "multi-media" key to start Windows Media Player. I got the keycode for that key and tried putting in fluxbox/keys but I couldn't get it to work. I was following this page http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=617812
Thanks TJC I'm glad to see you are still around.

OK followed the white rabbit to xorg.conf and a line that says "emulate 3 button mode" mine said "no" I changed it to "true"but I am recording now and don't want to mess up the recording. DOH!

alright that xorg.conf fix lets me click with left and right buttons to mimic a middle click. that works for me.

Oh, yeah, chording should work too. I'd have suggested that, but it seemed like you wanted a single button solution. My touch pad has two buttons, and while clicking them together works, it can require serious contortions. Two and three finger taps work too, but getting middle or right button drag that way isn't pretty. Sometimes it's just nice to have a single button that you can hold down.

absolutely I'm not giving up just yet. I have a broken phone, a broken computer, and an MP3 player on life support. I've gotta edit a video for my wife's friend and I'm working overtime at Star Wars Weekend. I'll get back to this soon.
The whole thing spawned from trying to paste into xterm on my machine.
