Post subject:  NVIDIA GeForce 6200 GPU

I currently have a JATON Video-338PCI-TV GeForce 6200 256MB installed in my machine and is not compatible with VDPAU: GeForce 8XXX cards are required.

That being said, is there an alternative to VDPAU to take advantage of the vieo card's NVIDIA CineFX 3.0 engine to relieve the CPU during HD playback?

If the answer is no, then it is time to hunt for a 'Tier 1' GeForce 8 series video card. As strange as it would sounds it would be good to have S-video out because most my TVs an my projector have S-Video.

Don't think so... you shouldn't need VDPAU with an E5200.

A 6200 based card will support XvMC but that's it AFAIK. In addition you lose the chromakey capabilities of the 5200 which means it only supports monochrome OSD.

An 8400 based card will do low end (feature set A) VDPAU. http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU If you're stuck with PCI or AGP this is probably the best you can get.

If your motherboard has a PCIe 16x slot a GT 210 will provide feature set C at about the same price.

Based on Graysky's counsel, I am going to stick with 6200 chipset.

I found this card for $44, however, my gut tells me there is something out there that is less expensive. I did the usual Google shopping search.

The box that I am outfitting is a $100 Dell Precision 370 and the PVR-150 was $11. Spending $44 on a S-video card seem high. My Jaton was $25 on eBay (back in Feb 2010). It now seems that GeForce 6200 PCI cards on eBay are $40 and up. A used JATON 338 is north of $50! Is there a PCI S-video solution (chipset) that is in the neighborhood of $20? (used is OK) It doesn't have to be high performance because it will be used for SD TV and maybe an occasional ripped DVD .avi. Thank you.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814139010R $37.99 (open box)

A lot of this depends on where a product is in it's life cycle. At a certain point retrofit parts like this become niche items and start to get more expensive than low end but current stuff.

Without a rebate deal, the price floor for Nviida cards for any bus seems to be about $30. At the moment AGP bus cards are at the bottom of the price curve, but they have already started to go back up. And PCIe 16x cards are starting to be comparable. For example here is the 512Mb version of the PCIe 16x card driving my current box for ~$37 (~22 after rebate) This is is an example current low end tech and actually cheaper than any of the PCI 6200 (or better) cards above because it's a volume product. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121443

That card is PCIe but I presume you only have PCI as your current card is PCI? That's kinda important... Only option for VDPAU on PCI is 8400GS, e.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814133364. I've gotten 2 for $0 after rebate :-) No SVIDEO on the one I linked to however :-( Given your reasonably good CPU, why do you feel the need to go easy on the CPU at all?

Wait - the Dell 370 has PCIe. I'm confused, this is too much work...

Actually the card he linked to in his original post is a PCI 2.1 NOT PCIe. From the Amazon web page (emphasis added):
Quote:
EVGA GeForce 6200 512 MB DDR2 PCI 2.1 VGA/DVI-I/S-Video Graphics Card, 512-P1-N402-LR

Yes but the second cad he linked to, which I quoted in my post, is PCIe, hence my frustration.
