I am consdiering an ASUS motherboard for compatibility with Archlinux (LinHES) and came across this review: Quote: Micro ATX form factor fits my case and will make an excellent HTPC. Has a PCI slot for my tuner card. Lots of USB options. And most importantly, its Linux and Ubuntu (Mythbuntu) compatible.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131716 Given this testimonial that it works in Linux \ Ubuntu, can I expect the LAN NIC, Audio, and Video to be supported under LinHES \ Archlinux, or is this just wishful thinking. Additional details include: ASUS P8H61-M (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel H61 HDMI http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8H61M/#specifications Sound: Realtek ALC887 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC LAN: RealtekĀ® 8111E , 1 x Gigabit LAN Controller(s) Core i7 / i5 / i3 (LGA1155) Video: Integrated Graphics Processor Multi-VGA output support : HDMI/DVI/RGB ports - Supports HDMI with max. resolution 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz - Supports DVI with max. resolution 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz - Supports RGB with max. resolution 2048 x 1536 @ 75 Hz In an ideal world there would be one good Archlinux HCL site. This website did not provide the insight I was looking for: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hardware_Compatibility_List I could not find which Video chipset was used (AAArgh!) so I do not know if it will support VDPAU. I don't want to buy this if the Sound or LAN chipset is not Tier 1 material (drivers already in R6.02). |

That Realtek 8111E looks like it may be the same one that gave me fits. Search for Realtek 8111E and you'll see it shows up in association with RTL8168*/8111* . Mine was the B model IIRC (not visible at the moment since I disable it in the BIOS) but a newer version is even less likely to have driver support in the 6.04 kernel. BTW the video is a Intel builtin so no VDPAU, last I checked only Nvidia was supporting it. |

Are you sure the 8111 is the problem child, I ask because I ran this on my machine: [root@mythtv ~]# lspci | grep Ethernet 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 02) [root@mythtv ~]# I think that I will probably go with Graysky's Gigabyte G41-M-ES2L Tier one MOBO, because the Gigabyte EG45M-UD2H (tier 1) is out of production: maybe it's successor (?model?) is tier 1. I am very motivated to use Tier 1 equipment, even if it's 2 years old. |

Yeah, I thought I had checked all the Linux compatibility issues before buying the MA78LMT-S2 but that NIC was definitely a problem and a fairly well documented one. |
