Has anyone has had VDPAU success with this card?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121422

Lessons learned would be appreciated. My mobo has HDMI (click on link in signature), but I don't think it supports VDPAU (hoping that someone will tell me I'm wrong) and not sure that the chipset can process 1080 video.

I think your motherboard is an Intel based chip which may be supportable with 0.25 (a bit early days though).

The GT210 should support VDPAU Normal profile (it is chipset C). I run older 9300s with VDPAU Normal and they do a very good job (not perfect). For more detail see also the mythtv wiki at: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/VDPAU

There was also some recent discussion on the mythtv user list on 210 vs other higher spec cards. Probably worth a google.

Personally I would opt for a higher spec fanless card. But it will be interesting to hear feedback from others.

@gator - as you know I have the same board and recently added an nvidia 210 but returned it and paid the extra $10 for the 520GT since it has more decoding support.

210
gt520

Explains the differences in feature sets: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Pur ... ature_Sets

I'll post some power consumption numbers soon: onboard vid vs. 210 vs 520gt.

@graysky: very nice. It would seem, that your upgrade from the 210 to the 520 buys you 'feature set D':

Quote:
Introduced 4K resolution / QFHD video decoding at up to 3840 x 2160 pixels

If this is true, when \ where is there video of this resolution? I thought 1080 was impressive: I have to see this!

Wondering if the onboard HDMI will ever be useful for 1080.

Yes. Works great. Audio over HDMI(*) and the whole 9 yards. I forget what VDPAU profile it's using, but can check if that will help. It's been doing full on max resolution HD for over a year now without breaking a sweat.

*For audio over HDMI in 6.04 I needed to upgrade the ALSA drivers.

For 7.x you should be ok on that front.

I do use HDMI on all of my Nvidia based systems. No issues. But I think you mean the Intel one you have. VAAPI support went into 0.25 but as mentioned it is early days. Personally I would just go with an NVidia card which is very well supported in the myth community.

The 4K / QFHD TVs are supposed to be coming out this year. I'm not yet aware of media that has the density to drive this level of quality. I'm not sure but I think BluRay is too small!

Onboard video:
idle=50 W
load=58-61 W (60 W about median)

Nvidia 210 w/ 512 MB RAM
idle=54 W
load=62-69 W (64 W about median)

Nvidia GT520 w/ 1024 MB RAM
idle=55 W
load=63-69 W (66 W about median)

The GT520 idles hotter than the 210 but I suspect that is due to the heatsink which is not level. Might have to pull it, use fresh thermal paste, and reseat it. (50C vs 56C)

idle = mythtv mainmenu @ 1920x1080
load = playing Big Buck Bunny 1080p (.mov). Approx 10kbps @ 24 fps.

Never ceases to amaze me just how shitting the thermal paste from the factory really is for these boards. When I pulled, cleaned, and reseated the heatsink on my Zotac Atom-based system, it dropped both CPU and GPU temps by a pretty large amount. Took me all of 5 min and $0.10 worth of Arctic Silver 5 to do the same thing with this GT520.

Idle temp dropped from 56C to 47C. Amazing. Will post some pics to a new thread.

For me the Asus 210 typically idles in the low 30s, and GPU temps max out around 55C when the case fan on the lowest speed, the house is warm, and it's under maximum load. Lowest I've seen is 25C when the house is rather chilly (say 55-59F). With the case fan on medium it's never gone above 50C even in the summer. As other people have noted, the heatsink on these cards is huge, and given any kind of decent airflow it does a heck of a job cooling them.

Perhaps you have a case that has better ventilation. Mine is a small form factor one.

Mondo ventilation. I computed how many air changes it does per hour once, based on case volume and CFM of the fans, and was startled. Highly recommended.

I have the silverstone which is very similar: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811163158

The heatsink to the vid card is next to the pvr card so there isn't a whole lot of breathing room in my setup.

This is a timely thread, since I am about to purchase the 210 myself (1 GB version). It will be replacing my old FX6200. Anyway, just wondering if I am going to need to reinstall Linhes once I drop this my case? Perhaps there is a way for all the drivers to for the new card to take effect without a reinstall? Thanks.

Both cards use the same driver so just drop in and it works. Get a GT530 instead is my advice. Newer card for nearly the same price. More features and more powerful. Same power consumption.
